{"id":2632,"date":"2005-08-26T00:09:00","date_gmt":"2005-08-26T00:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2005\/08\/carell-almighty\/"},"modified":"2005-08-26T00:09:00","modified_gmt":"2005-08-26T00:09:00","slug":"carell-almighty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2005\/08\/carell-almighty.html","title":{"rendered":"Carell Almighty!"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><span style=\"font-family: georgia\">Steve Carell, AKA the <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/08\/yep-that-was-me-on-npr.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">40-year-old virgin<\/a>, stole the show from Jim Carrey in <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B0000AKCKI\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bruce Almighty<\/a><\/i> (2003; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canadianchristianity.com\/cgi-bin\/bc.cgi?bc\/bccn\/0603\/artmatrix\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">my review<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/store.yahoo.com\/biblestudies\/brucealmighty.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">my Bible study<\/a>) \u2014 and now he\u2019s stealing the entire franchise.  <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/article\/VR1117928087\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Variety<\/a><\/i> reports:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Steve Carell is making a deal to star for Universal in \u201cEvan Almighty.\u201d He\u2019ll likely increase his $500,000 salary for \u201cThe 40-Year-Old Virgin\u201d at least tenfold.<\/p>\n<p>Conceived for Jim Carrey until he declined to reprise his role in \u201cBruce Almighty,\u201d sequel will take the news anchor character Carell played in that film and put him on an Almighty-inspired quest to build an ark in preparation for a great flood.<\/p>\n<p>Tom Shadyac will return as director, and Morgan Freeman is negotiating to encore as God. Steve Oedekerk wrote the script. Plans are for the film to begin production early next year. . . .<\/p>\n<p>Sony has an option to be co-financier of the film, handle foreign distribution and split the pot with U. That studio is a player because it paid $1.5 million against $2.5 million for Bobby Florsheim\/Josh Stolberg spec \u201cThe Passion of the Ark,\u201d a comedy about a widow told by the Almighty to build the boat. Shadyac, who was part of a rival bid in that spec auction, wanted to use it as the template for a sequel, and Sony made a deal with Universal and Spyglass . . .<\/p>\n<p>U prexy Donna Langley and senior veep Holly Bario will oversee the project. The studio has warmed to the idea of making a line of future \u201cAlmighty\u201d pictures, each of which would include Freeman as God. . . .<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Given how warm and soothing the God played by Morgan Freeman was, I would be surprised if they suggested that he was somehow <i>causing<\/i> this flood.  Still, the first film did kind-of ask how God could <i>allow<\/i> suffering, so if the new flood were to follow the template of the old flood, the new film could conceivably ask how God could <i>cause<\/i> suffering.  Or, to come at this from another angle, whereas the first film emphasized the compassion of God, the new film might emphasize his justice instead.  At any rate, this could make an interesting companion piece to the original film.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s just hope they don\u2019t go the route of that glib, post-modern mini-series <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/6305487871\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Noah\u2019s Ark<\/a><\/i> (1999; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianweek.org\/stories\/vol13\/no02\/culture.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">my review<\/a>), which starred Jon Voight as Noah and F.
