It has been so long since I saw Don Bluth\u2019s The Small One<\/a><\/i> (1978), I cannot remember if it was one of the good cartoons that came out between Walt Disney\u2019s death in 1966 and the studio\u2019s \u201crenaissance\u201d in the late 1980s, or if it was one of the studio\u2019s more embarrassing ventures. But no matter; because it is one of the few Disney cartoons that deals with biblical material, I think I shall have to pick up Classic Holiday Stories<\/a><\/i>, the ninth disc in the \u201c Classic Cartoon Favorites<\/a>\u201d series, which comes out Sept 27.<\/span><\/p>\n

FWIW, Bluth \u2014 who left Disney and went on to direct The Secret of NIMH<\/a><\/i> (1982), An American Tail<\/a><\/i> (1986), The Land Before Time<\/a><\/i> (1988; my comments<\/a>), Anastasia<\/a><\/i> (1997; my review<\/a>) and Titan A.E.<\/a><\/i> (2000), among others \u2014 is a former Mormon missionary, so his work on The Small One<\/i> was almost certainly motivated by his beliefs. And as I recall, there is nothing in the film that should raise any hackles for more orthodox Christian viewers.<\/p>\n

The disc also includes Pluto\u2019s Christmas Tree<\/i> (1952) and Mickey\u2019s Christmas Carol<\/i> (1983), both of which are already available on the limited-edition set Mickey Mouse in Living Color, Volume Two<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
