He makes some very good points about the limitations of Schaeffer\u2019s approach (does all art have a \u201cmessage\u201d? is it really all that easy to distinguish \u201cgood\u201d art from \u201cbad\u201d art? etc.) and how to move beyond that approach.<\/span><\/p>\nThough I would offer at least a token defense of understanding art in its historical contexts \u2014 it\u2019s more than just \u201cdry academics\u201d!
