$\"last_days_in_the_desert\"$ <\/a>The \u201cyear of the Bible movie\u201d may have come to an end, but the genre \u2014 and the issues it raised \u2014 aren\u2019t going away any time soon. For evidence of that, look no further than two panels coming up at the Sundance Film Festival, which starts later this week.<\/p>\n

Exhibit A:<\/b> The Dolby Institute is hosting \u2018Last Days in the Desert<\/i>: The Art of Sound Design and Music<\/a>\u2019, a panel that will look at Rodrigo Garcia\u2019s film<\/a> starring Ewan McGregor as Jesus and Satan, on January 27.<\/p>\n

Dolby has awarded the film its Dolby Family Sound Fellowship, which \u201cprovides a range of postproduction resources to allow the fellowship recipient to fulfill the creative potential of the film\u2019s sound design.\u201d A Dolby press release<\/a> states that the filmmakers \u201cdid a great job capturing the on-site soundscape of the desert,\u201d and that the film was chosen partly for its \u201ccomplex canvas and nuanced characters.\u201d<\/p>\n

The panel will be moderated by Glenn Kiser, director of the Dolby Institute, and it will feature Garcia as well as the film\u2019s composers and two of its sound mixers.<\/p>\n

The film itself will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 25.<\/p>\n

Exhibit B:<\/b> Tim Gray will host a panel on \u2018Faith in Film<\/a>\u2019 on January 29.<\/p>\n

Participants will include: Devon Franklin, producer of Heaven Is for Real<\/a><\/i>; Adam Hastings, director of marketing for Pure Flix Entertainment (the outfit behind God\u2019s Not Dead<\/a><\/i> and many other Christian films); Bill Reeves, founder of Working Title Agency; and Julie Fairchild, a publicist with Lovell-Fairchild Communications.<\/p>\n

The panelists \u201cwill explore the idea of faith in film, foster ideas about how to tell a compelling story, and provide insight into marketing to your target audience.\u201d<\/p>\n

It sounds like<\/b> these panels will be very different \u2014 one will look at an arthouse film while the other, from the sound of it, will look at what we might call, for lack of a better word, Christian \u201cniche\u201d or \u201cghetto\u201d films \u2014 but they\u2019re both about independent filmmaking of one sort or another, so they\u2019re a perfect fit for Sundance.<\/p>\n

I can\u2019t help wondering what it might have been like, though, if Sundance had hosted a panel that featured both<\/i> the arthouse filmmakers and<\/i> the niche filmmakers.
