The new film will be directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, the German director who made Das Experiment<\/a><\/i> (2001; my comments<\/a>), one of the more visceral and unsettling movies I\u2019ve seen in recent years, as well as the Oscar-nominated death-of-Hitler movie Downfall<\/a><\/i> (2004; my review<\/a>) \u2014 so this could<\/i> be an interesting film.<\/p>\n

FWIW, I have never seen Philip Kaufman\u2019s 1978 version<\/a> or Abel Ferrara\u2019s 1993 version<\/a>, but I did watch Don Siegel\u2019s 1956 version<\/a> while preparing a review of Mark Jancovich\u2019s Rational Fears: American horror in the 1950s<\/a><\/i> some years ago. That review is not online, but I did write a few paragraphs about the book \u2014 including a few sentences on Siegel\u2019s film \u2014 in this article<\/a> that I wrote around that time on Star Trek: First Contact<\/a><\/i> (1996).<\/p>\n
