After making a buck or two on <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2009\/01\/trojan-warriors-and-crying-infants.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Troy<\/a><\/i> (2004) and <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/10\/newsbites-myth-legend-and-history.html#2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">300<\/a><\/i> (2006), and after putting the gears in motion for their upcoming <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2009\/04\/clash-of-schindlers-list-veterans.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">remake<\/a> of <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2004\/04\/clash-of-titans-another-film-gets.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Clash of the Titans<\/a><\/i>, the studio has now acquired <i>Odysseus<\/i>, a spec script that would seem to be based on Homer\u2019s epic poem <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/03\/newsbites-superman-fagles-ranger-tintin.html#2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Odyssey<\/a><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It may not be quite what you\u2019d expect, though.  While Odysseus is best known for the ten years he spent wandering around the Mediterranean on his way home from the Trojan War, it sounds like the movie may skip all that and focus on the second half of Homer\u2019s epic, which takes place <i>after<\/i> Odysseus has arrived incognito on his home island of Ithaca.  <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/hr\/content_display\/film\/news\/e3ida99bf36787f149ad05ba335e8c55a54\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Hollywood Reporter<\/a><\/i> reports:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The story centers on the legendary hero Odysseus, famed king of Ithaca, who returns to his island after 20 years of fighting the Trojan Wars, only to find his kingdom under the brutal occupation of an invading force. Odysseus single-handedly defeats every last man and takes back his wife, his son and his kingdom. . . .<\/p>\n<p>The intent is to make not a sleepy swords-and-sandles epic but a bloody relentless revenge movie, something akin to \u201c300\u201d meets \u201cTaken.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The script is by <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/08\/earlier-works-of-narnia-screenwriter.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ann Peacock<\/a>, who may be best known for writing an early draft of <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/01\/inklings-article-archive.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Chronicles of Narnia:<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2009\/02\/random-thought-of-day.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe<\/a><\/i> (2005); and the director attached to the project is Jonathan Liebesman, who is currently directing the alien-invasion flick <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/11\/newsbites-sci-fi-and-fantasy-edition.html#4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Battle: Los Angeles<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, Warner Brothers is also behind that futuristic, outer-space version of <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/10\/brad-pitt-space-odysseus.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Odyssey<\/a><\/i> that was announced six months ago, starring Brad Pitt.  I wonder how <i>that<\/i> one\u2019s coming along?<\/p>\n<p>APR 26 UPDATE: I just remembered, Warner Brothers was also the studio behind Oliver Stone\u2019s <i>Alexander<\/i> (2004) \u2014 though that one didn\u2019t do so well at the box office. Even so, it\u2019s just further proof that, as the <i>Hollywood Reporter<\/i> puts it, someone at that studio \u201cclearly has an affinity for feta.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Warner Brothers sure likes its Greek myths and legends.
