{"id":32258,"date":"2015-05-22T11:17:59","date_gmt":"2015-05-22T18:17:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/?p=32258"},"modified":"2015-05-22T11:42:34","modified_gmt":"2015-05-22T18:42:34","slug":"lionsgate-sees-franchise-potential-in-homers-epic-poems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2015\/05\/lionsgate-sees-franchise-potential-in-homers-epic-poems.html","title":{"rendered":"Lionsgate sees &#8220;franchise&#8221; potential in Homer&#8217;s epic poems"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2015\/05\/troy-seanbean-a.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2015\/05\/troy-seanbean-a.jpg\" alt=\"troy-seanbean-a\" width=\"600\" height=\"228\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-32259\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It took ten years for the Greek hero Odysseus to come home from the Trojan War, and if Lionsgate has its way, it could take that long to tell his story on the big screen.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The studio behind <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/twilight\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Twilight<\/a><\/i>, <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/divergent\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Divergent<\/a><\/i> and <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/hunger-games\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">The Hunger Games<\/a><\/i> announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2015\/04\/the-hunger-games-team-prepares-to-go-on-an-odyssey.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">last month<\/a> that it was working on an adaptation of Homer\u2019s epic poem <i>The Odyssey<\/i>, and this morning, in a conference call, they revealed that they might make it a multi-movie \u201cfranchise\u201d that is also partly based on Homer\u2019s <i>other<\/i> epic poem <i>The Iliad<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/deadline.com\/2015\/05\/lionsgate-odyssey-franchise-possibility-iliad-jon-feltheimer-1201431582\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Deadline<\/a> reports:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe have high goals for this one\u2026.we\u2019re feeling very, very bullish,\u201d Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-Chairman Rob Friedman told analysts this morning as execs talked up the financial opportunities for the recently announced epic film from veterans of the studio\u2019s hit <i>Hunger Games<\/i> franchise.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, CEO Jon Feltheimer says that Lionsgate\u2019s deal for <i>The Odyssey<\/i> with director Francis Lawrence \u201ccontemplates more than one movie.\u201d And Friedman noted that \u201cthere\u2019s also this wonderful book called <i>The Iliad<\/i>, so we\u2019ve been thinking about the opportunities.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Feltheimer added that they expect the series to be popular overseas, and particularly in Latin America.<\/p>\n<p>It is not clear to me whether they plan to split <i>The Odyssey<\/i> into multiple installments <i>a la The Hobbit<\/i>, or whether they are thinking of doing sequels to Homer\u2019s epic.
