Genesis 1 \u2014 Episode 5:<\/i><\/b> Stephen teaches Peter how to read, using this passage.<\/p>\n
Leviticus 16 \u2014 Episode 10:<\/i><\/b> Caiaphas performs the Yom Kippur (or Day of Atonement) ceremonies, including placing all of the nation\u2019s sins upon a goat and sending it into the wilderness to die.<\/p>\n
Leviticus 19 \u2014 Episode 9:<\/i><\/b> Caiaphas quotes the command to \u201clove your neighbour as yourself\u201d when he tells his wife that Saul should not be killed but should, instead, be won back to the non-Christian form of Judaism that they practice.<\/p>\n
Deuteronomy 6 \u2014 Episode 3:<\/i><\/b> Peter and John recite the Shema<\/i>, which is partly based on this passage, while they are imprisoned. \u2014 Episode 11:<\/i><\/b> Reuben recites the Shema<\/i> when he thinks he is about to be assassinated.<\/p>\n
Deuteronomy 21 \u2014 Episode 6:<\/i><\/b> Saul says \u201canyone who is hung on a pole is under God\u2019s curse\u201d and, thus, Jesus could not have been raised by God from the dead.<\/p>\n
Deuteronomy 28 \u2014 Episode 5:<\/i><\/b> Caiaphas recites a list of curses while the apostles are flogged.<\/p>\n
Psalm 28 \u2014 Episode 1:<\/i><\/b> Caiaphas quotes this psalm while praying to God in the Temple, and as he gets to the words \u201cHear my cry for mercy,\u201d the film cuts to a shot of Jesus on the cross. There\u2019s a fascinating irony in the way Caiaphas prays to God \u2014 for mercy, even \u2014 while the Son of God is being killed at Caiaphas\u2019s behest.<\/p>\n
Psalm 57 \u2014 Episode 12:<\/i><\/b> Caiaphas recites a passage from this psalm while kneeling in protest during the climactic battle.<\/p>\n
Psalm 69 \u2014 Episode 5:<\/i><\/b> Both Peter and Caiaphas sing a mournful passage from this psalm when they find themselves standing before the dead body of Boaz.<\/p>\n
Psalm 77 \u2014 Episode 4:<\/i><\/b> Caiaphas recites this prayer while covering his head with ashes in the Temple, to mourn the deaths of Pilate\u2019s victims.<\/p>\n
Psalm 144 \u2014 Episode 4:<\/i><\/b> Boaz, a Zealot, cites a passage from this psalm as evidence that scripture supports his violent methods.<\/p>\n
Isaiah 35 \u2014 Episode 6:<\/i><\/b> Peter recites this passage at the burial of Stephen.<\/p>\n
Isaiah 53 \u2014 Episode 1:<\/i><\/b> When Joseph of Arimathea reveals that Jesus is buried in his tomb, Caiaphas and his wife accuse him of inadvertently fulfilling a prophecy from this passage (\u201cAnd he made his grave with the wicked and his tomb with the rich\u201d). \u2014 Episode 6:<\/i><\/b> Peter quotes the \u2018Suffering Servant\u2019 passage, and applies it to Jesus, during his debate with Saul. \u2014 Episode 11:<\/i><\/b> The Ethiopian eunuch is reading this passage when Philip meets him and tells him the passage is all about Jesus.<\/p>\n
Isaiah 60 \u2014 Episode 6:<\/i><\/b> John recites this passage as Peter prepares Stephen for burial.<\/p>\n
Jeremiah 17 \u2014 Episode 2:<\/i><\/b> Caiaphas recites this passage before sinking into his mikvah.<\/p>\n
Daniel 9 \u2014 Episode 3:<\/i><\/b> One of Boaz\u2019s Zealot colleagues says Pilate\u2019s visit to the Temple could be the \u201cabomination\u201d that the prophets foretold. \u2014 Episode 9:<\/i><\/b> Caiaphas and John separately state that if Caligula\u2019s statue goes up in the Temple, it could be the \u201cabomination of desolation\u201d that Daniel prophesied. Mary Magdalene adds to John\u2019s speculation by saying that \u201cwar will come like a flood.\u201d<\/p>\n
Matthew 5 \u2014 Episode 10:<\/i><\/b> Saul says Jesus came not to abolish the Law but to fulfill it.<\/p>\n
Matthew 6 \u2014 Episode 3:<\/i><\/b> The disciples are reciting the Lord\u2019s Prayer when the Holy Spirit arrives at Pentecost. \u2014 Episode 9:<\/i><\/b> Saul recites the Lord\u2019s Prayer in prison. \u2014 Episode 12:<\/i><\/b> The apostles recite the Lord\u2019s Prayer while kneeling in protest during the climactic battle.<\/p>\n
Matthew 7 \u2014 Episode 11:<\/i><\/b> Peter preaches in Joppa that there are two roads and\/or gates, one broad and one narrow, as per Jesus\u2019 teaching.<\/p>\n
Matthew 26 \/ John 18 \u2014 Episode 1:<\/i><\/b> When Boaz tells Peter and the other Christians that they should join the Zealots, Peter replies, \u201cLive by the sword and you die by the sword,\u201d which is basically what Jesus said to Peter after Peter cut off Malchus\u2019s ear \u2014 but the ear-cutting is never depicted or even mentioned in this series.<\/p>\n
Matthew 27 \u2014 Episode 8:<\/i><\/b> Pilate\u2019s wife Claudia has a dream in which Caligula kills Tiberius \u2014 and the dream comes true. This echoes her dream about Jesus.<\/p>\n
Mark 5 \u2014 Episode 11:<\/i><\/b> The episode doesn\u2019t draw attention to this fact, but when Peter says, \u201cTabitha, get up,\u201d it echoes the words of Jesus \u2014 \u201cTalitha koum<\/i>\u201d \u2014 when he raised Jairus\u2019s daughter.<\/p>\n
Mark 6 \/ Matthew 14 \/ Luke 9 \u2014 Episode 8:<\/i><\/b> Joanna reminds Mary Magdalene that her employers \u2014 Herod Antipas and Herodias \u2014 killed John the Baptist.<\/p>\n
Mark 10 \/ Matthew 19 \/ Luke 18 \u2014 Episode 10:<\/i><\/b> Joanna and Mary Magdalene tell Tabitha the \u201ceye of a needle\u201d story \u2014 which is fitting, since Tabitha is a seamstress.<\/p>\n
Mark 13 \/ Matthew 24 \u2014 Episode 9:<\/i><\/b> John talks about how Jesus quoted Daniel\u2019s prophecy about the \u201cabomination\u201d when he predicted his Second Coming. \u2014 Episode 12:<\/i><\/b> The apostles discuss whether Caligula\u2019s statue is the \u201cabomination\u201d that Jesus mentioned, and whether they should flee to the hills like Jesus said.<\/p>\n
Mark 14 \/ Matthew 26 \/ Luke 22 \/ I Corinthians 11 \u2014 Episode 7:<\/i><\/b> Peter leads a celebration of the Eucharist, which was instituted by Jesus at the Last Supper.<\/p>\n
Luke 2 \u2014 Episode 10:<\/i><\/b> James recalls how Jesus stayed behind in the Temple when he was a boy \u2014 and it is James, rather than Mary or Joseph, who finds him.<\/p>\n
Luke 2 \/ John 2 \u2014 Episode 12:<\/i><\/b> Peter recalls that Jesus called the Temple his \u201cfather\u2019s house\u201d.<\/p>\n
Luke 8 \u2014 Episode 8:<\/i><\/b> Joanna is married to Chuza, the manager of Herod Antipas\u2019s household, and there is a reference to how both Joanna and Mary Magdalene were cured of demons by Jesus. \u2014 Episode 9:<\/i><\/b> Joanna gives Mary Magdalene some money \u201cfor the cause\u201d, which reflects how both of these women supported Jesus and his followers \u201cout of their own means\u201d.<\/p>\n
Luke 10 \u2014 Episode 7:<\/i><\/b> When the other Christians warn Philip about the dangers of going to Samaria, Philip replies, \u201cI\u2019m sure there\u2019s some good Samaritans,\u201d which is a cute nod to the parable Jesus told. \u2014 Episode 12:<\/i><\/b> Peter cites the Parable of the Good Samaritan when he says the apostles can\u2019t just ignore the Jewish protestors, the way the priest in the parable ignored the man who had been beaten by robbers.<\/p>\n
Luke 23 \u2014 Episode 11:<\/i><\/b> John reminds Peter that Jesus said, \u201cFather, forgive them\u2026\u201d on the cross (though the series did not show Jesus actually saying this).<\/p>\n
John 8 \u2014 Episode 6:<\/i><\/b> Peter preaches in the streets of Jerusalem that Jesus is \u201cthe light of the world\u201d, which is something that Jesus said about himself.<\/p>\n
John 9 \u2014 Episode 8:<\/i><\/b> Saul says he hopes the Christians will forgive him because \u201cI was blind, now I see,\u201d which echoes something said by the blind man Jesus healed.<\/p>\n
John 11 \u2014 Episode 1:<\/i><\/b> Caiaphas tells Joseph of Arimathea, \u201cThe life of one man is as nothing, Joseph, for the sake of God\u2019s nation,\u201d which echoes what he told his fellow priests after Lazarus\u2019s resurrection. \u2014 Episode 12:<\/i><\/b> Caiaphas says to his wife, \u201cWho cares about you, about an individual, a family,\u201d which echoes his statement that it would be better for one man to die than for the whole nation to perish.<\/p>\n
John 13 \u2014 Episode 9:<\/i><\/b> Barnabas talks to Peter about the time Jesus washed Peter\u2019s feet.<\/p>\n
John 14 \u2014 Episode 6:<\/i><\/b> Peter says Jesus is the way, the truth and the life and no one gets to the Father but through him, which is something Jesus said about himself. \u2014 Episode 8:<\/i><\/b> While Peter heals people in Samaria, John tells the Samaritans watching them that Jesus is \u201cthe way, the truth and the life.\u201d<\/p>\n
Acts 22 \u2014 Episode 6:<\/i><\/b> The teacher-student relationship between Gamaliel and Saul is reflected in the conversations between the two characters in this episode. \u2014 Episode 8:<\/i><\/b> Ananias tells Saul that God \u201chas chosen you to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear the words from his mouth.\u201d<\/p>\n
Romans 8 \u2014 Episode 10:<\/i><\/b> Saul comforts Tabitha with words that the historical Saul wrote about 20 years after the events of this episode.<\/p>\n
I Corinthians 13 \u2014 Episode 6:<\/i><\/b> Peter tells Saul that his knowledge means nothing without love, which will of course become a big theme for Saul in this passage.<\/p>\n
Galatians 1 \u2014 Episode 10:<\/i><\/b> Saul meets James in Jerusalem.<\/p>\n
Galatians 3 \u2014 Episode 6:<\/i><\/b> Saul cites Deuteronomy 21 as evidence of why Jesus could not<\/i> have been raised from the dead. Years later, he will cite that same passage in his letter to the Galatians, to demonstrate that Jesus\u2019 victory over death is complete precisely because<\/i> he suffered the worst kind of death imaginable under the law.<\/p>\n
II Thessalonians 1 \u2014 Episode 2:<\/i><\/b> A host of \u201cwarrior angels\u201d are included in the Ascension scene, despite their absence from this scene in Luke and Acts, in anticipation of how the angels will accompany Jesus at his Second Coming. (There are similar passages in Mark 8 & 13, Matthew 13 & 16 & 24-25, Luke 9 and John 1.)<\/p>\n
