Paramount Pictures seems to have a thing for Bible epics. First they revived the genre with Darren Aronofsky\u2019s Noah<\/a><\/i>, and then they partnered with MGM on a remake of Ben-Hur<\/a><\/i> that is due next year. Now comes word \u2014 via The Tracking Board<\/a> \u2014 that the studio may be planning a remake of The Ten Commandments<\/a><\/i>, as well.1<\/sup><\/p>\n

There are no details about the project yet, beyond the fact that it has two producers \u2014 Mary Parent and Cale Boyter \u2014 who both worked on Noah<\/i><\/a>. Boyter was also an executive producer on the non-epic Bible movie The Nativity Story<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n

The Tracking Board says the producers are currently looking for a writer-director who can offer \u201ca different take\u201d on the story than previous films have offered.<\/p>\n

This news comes only ten months after 20th Century Fox released Exodus: Gods and Kings<\/a><\/i> to poor reviews<\/a> and middling returns<\/a> at the box office.<\/p>\n

Some people might look at the disappointing grosses for Exodus<\/i> and conclude that audiences aren\u2019t really interested in movies about Moses. Others, however \u2014 presumably including the producers of this remake \u2014 might argue that there\u2019s still an audience out there for movies about the Exodus if they are well-made<\/i>.<\/p>\n

If there really is<\/i> room for other Moses movies right now, then I hope someone dusts off the Moses project that was being developed at Warner Brothers<\/a> shortly before Exodus<\/i> got the green light. From what I hear, it could have been really good.<\/p>\n

One thing\u2019s for sure: It wouldn\u2019t be too hard to make a better<\/i> Moses movie than Exodus: Gods and Kings<\/i>. That film left a lot of room for improvement.<\/p>\n

1. Of course, the famous 1956 version of The Ten Commandments<\/i> was, itself, a remake of a 1923 film<\/a> that was set partly in the present day; both versions were directed by Cecil B. DeMille.
