{"id":36646,"date":"2015-11-12T21:41:44","date_gmt":"2015-11-13T05:41:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/?p=36646"},"modified":"2015-11-12T21:41:44","modified_gmt":"2015-11-13T05:41:44","slug":"here-we-go-again-gods-of-egypt-and-the-diversity-debate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2015\/11\/here-we-go-again-gods-of-egypt-and-the-diversity-debate.html","title":{"rendered":"Here we go again: <i>Gods of Egypt<\/i> and the &#8220;diversity&#8221; debate"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2015\/11\/godsofegypt.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2015\/11\/godsofegypt.jpg\" alt=\"godsofegypt\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36697\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It has been a little over two years since I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2013\/09\/new-movie-gives-egyptian-gods-the-epic-fantasy-treatment.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">first mentioned<\/a> the ancient-mythological epic <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/gods-of-egypt\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Gods of Egypt<\/a><\/i> here at this blog, and now \u2014 with the film\u2019s release only three and a half months away \u2014 we <i>finally<\/i> have some official images from the film.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The studio released six character posters through six different websites today. And, predictably, many people are complaining about the ethnic composition of the movie\u2019s cast, the same way they did about <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/exodus-2015\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Exodus: Gods and Kings<\/a><\/i> last year.<\/p>\n<p>Case in point: the headline on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/arts-and-entertainment\/wp\/2015\/11\/12\/gods-of-egypt-promo-posters-reveal-no-lessons-learned-from-exodus-fiasco\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">a <i>Washington Post<\/i> article<\/a> by Soraya Nadia McDonald complains that \u201cno lessons [were] learned\u201d from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2014\/12\/a-brief-comment-on-the-exodus-gods-and-kings-casting-controversy.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">the <i>Exodus<\/i> controversy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But <i>Gods of Egypt<\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2014\/03\/thieves-pharaohs-and-gods-a-new-film-and-a-new-tv-show.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">started shooting<\/a> in March 2014 \u2014 four months before the <i>Exodus<\/i> controversy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2014\/08\/exodus-news-round-up-a-set-visit-a-casting-controversy-and-who-exactly-is-ben-mendelsohn-playing.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">flared up<\/a>, and nine months before the film itself came out. What\u2019s more, I think the studio behind <i>Gods of Egypt<\/i> was trying to head off a similar controversy by releasing posters that feature actors from a range of ethnic backgrounds.<\/p>\n<p>Admittedly, yes, three of the posters feature white actors: Gerard Butler as the bad god Set (via <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ew.com\/article\/2015\/11\/12\/gods-of-egypt-gerard-butler-character-poster\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Entertainment Weekly<\/a><\/i>), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as the good god Horus (via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/movies\/gods-of-egypt-posters-reveal-an-otherworldly-180158240.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Yahoo! Movies<\/a>) and Brenton Thwaites as a thief named Bek (via <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GodsofEgypt\/status\/664867103703347201\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Twitter<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2015\/11\/godsofegypt-gerardbutler.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wp.production.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/files\/2015\/11\/godsofegypt-gerardbutler-194x300.jpg\" alt=\"godsofegypt-gerardbutler\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-36662\"><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2015\/11\/godsofegypt-nikolajcosterwaldau.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wp.production.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/files\/2015\/11\/godsofegypt-nikolajcosterwaldau-194x300.jpg\" alt=\"godsofegypt-nikolajcosterwaldau\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-36663\"><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2015\/11\/godsofegypt-brentonthwaites.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2015\/11\/godsofegypt-brentonthwaites-194x300.jpg\" alt=\"godsofegypt-brentonthwaites\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-36661\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But two of the posters also feature actresses of part-Asian descent: Elodie Yung, who is <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%C3%89lodie_Yung\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">half-Cambodian<\/a>, as the goddess Hathor (via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hitfix.com\/harpy\/exclusive-hathor-is-a-golden-goddess-of-love-and-snake-death-in-gods-egypt-poster\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Hitfix<\/a>) and Courtney Eaton, who is <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Courtney_Eaton\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">part-Chinese<\/a>, as the mortal woman Zaya (via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.teen.com\/2015\/11\/12\/movies\/gods-of-egypt-zaya-courtney-eaton-character-poster\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Teen.com<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2015\/11\/godsofegypt-elodieyung.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wp.production.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/files\/2015\/11\/godsofegypt-elodieyung.jpg\" alt=\"godsofegypt-elodieyung\" width=\"295\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36668\"><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2015\/11\/godsofegypt-courtneyeaton.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2015\/11\/godsofegypt-courtneyeaton.jpg\" alt=\"godsofegypt-courtneyeaton\" width=\"295\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36667\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And one features African-American Chadwick Boseman as the god Thoth (via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/media\/rm611050240\/tt2404233\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">IMDb<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2015\/11\/godsofegypt-chadwickboseman.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2015\/11\/godsofegypt-chadwickboseman.jpg\" alt=\"godsofegypt-chadwickboseman\" width=\"425\" height=\"656\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36673\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is a marked improvement on <i>Exodus: Gods and Kings<\/i>, which featured a number of Middle Eastern actors in the supporting roles but only white actors in the major roles (with the possible exception of Ben Kingsley, who is half-Indian).<\/p>\n<p>But that isn\u2019t stopping <i>some<\/i> people from complaining about this new film.<\/p>\n<p>And so it looks like we\u2019re in for another several months of hand-wringing over the \u201cwhitewashing\u201d of ancient Egypt \u2014 hand-wringing that will overlook the diversity that <i>does<\/i> exist within this film, just as it overlooked the diversity within
