Remember how The Passion of the Christ<\/a><\/i> (2004) was originally known as The Passion<\/i>, and then as The Passion of Christ<\/i> without the \u201cthe\u201d, before the title finally grew to its present length?<\/span><\/p>\n

Co-writer Benedict Fitzgerald<\/a>\u2018s follow-up has gone in sort of the opposite direction: first it was known as Myriam, Mother of the Christ<\/a><\/i>, and then it was known as the one-syllable-shorter Mary, Mother of the Christ<\/a><\/i> \u2014 and now, according to Variety<\/a><\/i>, it is simply Mary, Mother of Christ<\/i> without the \u201cthe\u201d.<\/p>\n

But that\u2019s a trivial detail. The really big news now is that a director and several noteworthy actors have signed on to make the film, which was co-written by Fitzgerald and Barbara Nicolosi<\/a> \u2014 and Variety<\/i> is naming names. So far, we have:<\/p>\n

  1. Mary \u2014 Camilla Belle<\/a> (Push<\/i>, 10,000 B.C.<\/i>)<\/li>\n
  2. Herod the Great \u2014 Al Pacino<\/a> (The Godfather<\/i>, Salomaybe?<\/i>)<\/li>\n
  3. Gabriel\/Lucifer \u2014 Jonathan Rhys Meyers<\/a> (The Tudors<\/i>, Samson and Delilah<\/i>)<\/li>\n
  4. Symeon \u2014 Peter O\u2019Toole<\/a> (Lawrence of Arabia<\/i>, One Night with the King<\/i>)<\/li>\n
  5. Anna the Prophetess \u2014 Jessica Lange<\/a> (Cape Fear<\/i>, King Kong<\/i>)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The film will be directed by Alejandro Agresti, whose last film was the time-bending love-story remake The Lake House<\/a><\/i> (2006).<\/p>\n

    I\u2019m sure all sorts of related trivia points will occur to me in the next little while. For now, the first one that comes to mind, for some reason, is the fact that this will mark the third film to co-star Jessica Lange and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, following Titus<\/i> (1999) and Prozac Nation<\/i> (2001).<\/p>\n

    Oh, and of course, it is kind of funny that Pacino would play Herod the Great in this film, since I believe he is also playing Herod\u2019s son Antipas in the not-quite-finished-yet Salomaybe?<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n

    One last comment, for now: It does not look like ethnic authenticity<\/a>, of the sort that we saw in The Nativity Story<\/a><\/i> (2006), will be one of this film\u2019s top priorities.<\/p>\n
