North American TV networks have been experimenting with live musicals lately, from 2013\u2019s The Sound of Music Live!<\/i> to last month\u2019s The Wiz Live!<\/i> and next month\u2019s Grease: Live<\/i>. So it\u2019s not too surprising that the Fox network announced this week<\/a> that it will air a live musical about the death of Jesus on Palm Sunday (March 20).<\/p>\n

What is<\/i> surprising is that the source material will be not one of the other \u201960s or \u201970s musicals that is well-known over here, such as Godspell<\/i> or Jesus Christ Superstar<\/i>, but a Dutch musical that has aired live in the Netherlands every year since 2011.<\/p>\n

<\/iframe><\/p>\nThe American version, which will simply be called The Passion<\/i>, will be staged in New Orleans and hosted by Tyler Perry, and a press release says it will \u201cfeature a cast of today\u2019s biggest stars . . . performing a variety of popular music, arranged by executive producer and hit music producer Adam Anders (\u2018Glee,\u2019 \u2018Rock of Ages\u2019).\u201d<\/p>\nThe American musical won\u2019t use the same songs as the Dutch musical, and Anders states in the press release that he is looking forward to creating \u201cnew arrangements of some of the biggest songs of all time\u201d \u2014 so it seems that the American show won\u2019t have much in common with the Dutch show beyond the basic format.<\/p>\nThe musical will also feature a procession in which hundreds of people carry \u201ca 20-foot, illuminated cross\u201d.
