We\u2019re fans of Darren Aronofsky\u2019s Noah<\/a><\/i> here at FilmChat, and indeed we\u2019ve been fans of Aronofsky going all the way back to his first feature film \u03c0<\/i>. (Click here<\/a> to read the phone interview I did with him in 1998. I interviewed him again in 2014<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

So we\u2019ve been curious as to how Aronofsky would follow up his groundbreaking Bible epic. He\u2019s producing<\/i> a number of things, but what would he direct<\/i> next?<\/p>\n

This morning, we got our answer: Paramount, the studio behind Noah<\/i>, confirmed the rumour<\/a> that Aronofsky\u2019s next film will star Jennifer Lawrence \u2014 and it said the currently untitled film will be about \u201ca couple whose relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence.\u201d<\/p>\n

It will be interesting to see if the new film has any parallels to Noah<\/i>, or if it sheds any light on that film. Certainly Noah<\/i> has a lot in common with the five films Aronofsky made before<\/i> that \u2014 see here<\/a> for an illustrated list of almost two dozen overlaps \u2014 so it stands to reason that it could have a lot in common with his later works, too.<\/p>\n

Just for fun, here are a few other noteworthy Bible films, along with the films that their directors made right after their foray into the Bible-movie genre:<\/p>\n

The Ten Commandments<\/a><\/i> (1956) \u2014 directed by Cecil B. DeMille \u2014 his last film, but it did follow Samson and Delilah<\/a><\/i> (1949) and the circus movie The Greatest Show on Earth<\/i> (1952), which involved a large caravan \u00e0 la<\/i> the migrating Hebrews.<\/p>\n

The Gospel According to St. Matthew<\/a><\/i> (1964) \u2014 directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini \u2014 followed by Hawks and Sparrows<\/a><\/i> (1966), in which the girl who played an angel in the earlier film once again appears in an angel costume, but more irreverently.<\/p>\n

The Last Temptation of Christ<\/a><\/i> (1988) \u2014 directed by Martin Scorsese \u2014 followed by Goodfellas<\/i> (1990), which admittedly doesn\u2019t seem on the surface to have a lot of overlap with the earlier film; a closer link could be made to Cape Fear<\/i> (1991), in which the villain is something of a religious fanatic (a dig at Last Temptation<\/i>\u2019s protestors?).<\/p>\n

The Passion of the Christ<\/a><\/i> (2004) \u2014 directed by Mel Gibson \u2014 followed by Apocalypto<\/a><\/i> (2006), which was similarly violent and consisted entirely of subtitled dialogue.<\/p>\n

The Nativity Story<\/a><\/i> (2006) \u2014 directed by Catherine Hardwicke \u2014 followed by Twilight<\/a><\/i> (2008), which was similarly about a teenaged girl\u2019s encounter with the supernatural.<\/p>\n

Exodus: Gods and Kings<\/a><\/i> (2014) \u2014 directed by Ridley Scott \u2014 followed by The Martian<\/a><\/i> (2015), which was similarly shot in Wadi Rum<\/a>, in Jordan.<\/p>\n
