Fireproof<\/a><\/i> came out on DVD today \u2014 in two versions, one a regular edition for the mainstream market<\/a>, and the other a \u201cspecial collector\u2019s edition\u201d for the Christian market<\/a> \u2014 and just as there was something a little unusual about the way this movie was made (i.e., by a cast and crew made up almost entirely of church-based volunteers), so too there is something a little unusual about the way this film has been packaged for home video.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here, for example, is a screen that pops up when you first load the \u201ccollector\u2019s edition\u201d in your player:<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t think I have ever seen a message like that at the beginning of a regular DVD before. What makes it even more interesting is that both versions of this disc include a \u201cstudy guide\u201d and a collection of film clips that are meant<\/i> to be used by groups \u2014 but I guess these materials are intended for home-based<\/i> study groups, and thus they fall under the category of \u201chome viewing\u201d rather than the category of a public \u201cevent\u201d:<\/p>\n

Finally, note how the opening menu screen on the \u201ccollector\u2019s edition\u201d makes a distinction between the regular \u201cspecial features\u201d and the \u201cexclusive bonus features\u201d found only on this disc:<\/p>\n

Oh, one last thought: I admire the way that this disc \u2014 both the packaging and the menu screens \u2014 avoids drawing all that much attention to the actors involved in this film. Even the one bona fide celebrity, Kirk Cameron<\/a>, is kept in shadow. This keeps the focus on the overall movie<\/i> and not on any of the personalities involved, and it underscores the point that this movie exists for ministry reasons, and not to stroke anyone\u2019s ego.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
