{"id":39920,"date":"2016-02-04T12:29:32","date_gmt":"2016-02-04T20:29:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/?p=39920"},"modified":"2016-02-05T00:07:45","modified_gmt":"2016-02-05T08:07:45","slug":"the-brazilian-moses-movie-is-big-but-not-quite-that-big","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2016\/02\/the-brazilian-moses-movie-is-big-but-not-quite-that-big.html","title":{"rendered":"The Brazilian Moses movie is big, but not quite <i>that<\/i> big"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/02\/osdezmandamentos-moses.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/02\/osdezmandamentos-moses-1024x331.jpg\" alt=\"osdezmandamentos-moses\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-39944\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So, just how big a hit <i>was<\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/os-dez-mandamentos\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">that Brazilian movie about Moses<\/a> that opened last week?<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Before it came out, some people were saying that <i>Os Dez Mandamentos<\/i> could become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2016\/01\/brazils-biggest-home-grown-box-office-hit-could-be-a-bible-epic-about-moses-re-edited-from-a-local-tv-series.html#more-39583\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">the biggest local box-office hit in Brazil\u2019s history<\/a>, given its strong pre-ticket sales.<\/p>\n<p>Now <i><a href=\"http:\/\/variety.com\/2016\/film\/global\/moses-tv-record-globo-brazil-1201696879\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Variety<\/a><\/i> reports that, while the film did have a very good first weekend \u2014 earning the equivalent of $6.1 million in U.S. currency \u2014 it hasn\u2019t set any new records yet:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Premiering on Jan. 28, Brazilian biblical epic \u201cMoses and the 10 Commandments,\u201d the first theatrical film produced by broadcaster TV Record, scored R$24.1 million ($6.1 million) at Brazil\u2019s box office, marking the biggest four-day weekend bow for a local pic in almost two years.<\/p>\n<p>Bowing on 1,162 screens, and released by Brazilian distributors Downtown Filmes and Paris Filmes, \u201cMoses\u201d snagged 2.1 million admissions, with a strong average of 1,838 tickets per screen, according to Filme B, Brazil\u2019s leading source of film statistical analysis. . . .<\/p>\n<p>In absolute terms, \u201cMoses\u201d represents the fifth best opening since March 2014 \u2013 when Brazil moved films\u2019 release day to Thursdays \u2013 in a ranking led by Disney\u2019s \u201cAvengers: Age of Ultron\u201d ($12.6 million) and UPI\u2019s \u201cFurious 7\u201d ($11.9 million).<\/p>\n<p>The standout \u201cMoses\u201d results, however, are still far from those from Brazilian 2010\u2019s smash hit \u201cElite Squad 2,\u201d which snagged a $7.9 million record in its first weekend. . . .<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><i>Elite Squad 2<\/i> went on to gross about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/movies\/?page=intl&amp;country=BR&amp;id=elitesquad2.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">$63 million<\/a> in total \u2014 or nearly eight times what it made in its opening weekend.
