In fact, the winner that year \u2014 <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/03\/newsbites-cars-crash-bashing-id-trial.html#2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Crash<\/a><\/i> \u2014 grossed a mere $54.6 million and ranked way, way down at #49.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/oscar\/chart\/?yr=2006&amp;view=fulldetail&amp;catid=1&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">2006<\/a> brought a return to Hollywood form with the Best Picture victory of <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/11\/gibson-turns-down-scorsese-role-again.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Departed<\/a><\/i>, which grossed $132.4 million and ranked #15 for the year.<\/p>\n<p>Then, in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/oscar\/chart\/?yr=2007&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">2007<\/a>, the Oscars went \u201carthouse\u201d again, by giving the top prize to <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/01\/more-trivial-box-office-data.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">No Country for Old Men<\/a><\/i>, which grossed $74.3 million and ranked #36 for the year.  Ironically, the only nominee that year to gross over $100 million was also an \u201cindependent\u201d film, namely <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/10\/sleeping-with-piece-of-movie-history.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Juno<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>And now, it is time for the <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2009\/01\/oscar-nominations-two-new-milestones.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">nominees<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/oscar\/chart\/?yr=2008&amp;view=fulldetail&amp;catid=1&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">2008<\/a>.  Here are their current grosses and box-office rankings, as of yesterday:<\/p>\n<ol type=\"disc\">\n<li><i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2009\/01\/curious-case-of-benjamin-gump.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Curious Case of Benjamin Button<\/a><\/i> \u2014 $104,388,850 \u2014 22nd<\/li>\n<li><i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2009\/01\/newsbites-box-office-trivia-edition.html#4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Slumdog Millionaire<\/a><\/i> \u2014 $44,711,799 \u2014 62nd<\/li>\n<li><i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2009\/01\/vancouver-film-critics-circle-winners.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Milk<\/a><\/i> \u2014 $20,655,400 \u2014 111th<\/li>\n<li><i>Frost\/Nixon<\/i> \u2014 $8,888,701 \u2014 145th<\/li>\n<li><i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/12\/reader-reviews-up.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Reader<\/a><\/i> \u2014 $8,061,851 \u2014 148th<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia\">For what it\u2019s worth, this marks the first time since <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/oscar\/chart\/?yr=1983&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">1983<\/a> that not one but <i>two<\/i> of the Best Picture nominees had made less than $10 million at the time of their nomination.  And, between them, the five nominees for 2008 have an average gross of $37,341,320, which is virtually tied with 2005\u2019s average of $37,279,704; you have to go all the way back to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/oscar\/chart\/?yr=1986&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">1986<\/a> to find a year that had a clearly lower average on the day the nominees were announced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Of course, these totals can and will change, and the rankings of the various films will no doubt slide up a bit.
