{"id":41078,"date":"2016-02-28T16:13:40","date_gmt":"2016-02-29T00:13:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/?p=41078"},"modified":"2016-02-28T23:16:47","modified_gmt":"2016-02-29T07:16:47","slug":"box-office-risen-drops-gods-of-egypt-flops-and-deadpool-becomes-the-3rd-biggest-r-rated-movie-ever-worldwide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2016\/02\/box-office-risen-drops-gods-of-egypt-flops-and-deadpool-becomes-the-3rd-biggest-r-rated-movie-ever-worldwide.html","title":{"rendered":"Box office: <i>Risen<\/i> drops, <i>Gods of Egypt<\/i> flops, and <i>Deadpool<\/i> becomes the 3rd-biggest R-rated movie ever worldwide"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/02\/godsofegypt-characters-a.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-41223\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/02\/godsofegypt-characters-a-1024x297.jpg\" alt=\"godsofegypt-characters-a\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-41223\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/resurrection-aiello\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Risen<\/a><\/i> had a modest drop at the box office in its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/weekend\/chart\/?view=&amp;yr=2016&amp;wknd=09&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">second week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The film earned an estimated $7 million between Friday and Sunday, which was good enough for fourth place \u2014 behind the third week of <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/deadpool\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Deadpool<\/a><\/i>, the disastrously low opening weekend for <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/gods-of-egypt\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Gods of Egypt<\/a><\/i>, and the fifth week of <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/kung-fu-panda-3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Kung Fu Panda 3<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><i>Risen<\/i>\u2019s second-week gross was only 40.7% less than what the film made in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2016\/02\/box-office-risen-is-the-weeks-top-new-film-and-deadpool-takes-aim-at-the-passion-of-the-christs-r-rated-record.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">opening weekend<\/a>. That\u2019s comparable to the second-week drops of <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/passion-of-the-christ\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">The Passion of the Christ<\/a><\/i> (36.5%) and <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/nativity-story\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">The Nativity Story<\/a><\/i> (27.2%) and gentler than the second-week drops for <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/son-of-god\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Son of God<\/a><\/i> (59.5%), <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/noah-2014\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Noah<\/a><\/i> (61%) and <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/exodus-2015\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Exodus: Gods and Kings<\/a><\/i> (66.4%).<\/p>\n<p><i>Risen<\/i>\u2019s cume now stands at $22.7 million. More on that in a minute.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <i>Deadpool<\/i> earned $31.5 million in its third week to bring its domestic total up to $285.6 million \u2014 making it the third-highest-grossing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/alltime\/domestic\/mpaa.htm?page=R&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">R-rated film<\/a> in North America ever, behind 2004\u2019s <i>The Passion of the Christ<\/i> and 2014\u2019s <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/american-sniper\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">American Sniper<\/a><\/i>. And it is comfortably ahead of where those films were in <i>their<\/i> third weekends.<\/p>\n<p><i>Deadpool<\/i> is already well ahead of both of those films overseas, but the $324.2 million it has earned overseas currently ranks behind eight other R-rated movies.<\/p>\n<p>However, when you add the domestic and foreign figures, <i>Deadpool<\/i> is now the third-highest-grossing R-rated movie worldwide, behind <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/matrix-reloaded\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">The Matrix Reloaded<\/a><\/i> and <i>The Passion of the Christ<\/i> \u2014 and it should pass <i>The Passion<\/i> by tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>In other news, <i>Gods of Egypt<\/i> became the year\u2019s first big flop.<\/p>\n<p>The film, which cost $140 million to produce, made just a tenth of that at the North American box office this week, and the $14 million that it earned was easily the lowest opening for an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?id=alexproyas.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Alex Proyas film<\/a> in wide release since 1998\u2019s <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/dark-city-1998\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Dark City<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"http:\/\/deadline.com\/2016\/02\/deadpool-gods-of-egypt-eddie-the-eagle-triple-9-box-office-1201709751\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Deadline<\/a> notes, <i>Gods of Egypt<\/i> was originally going to come out in April, two weeks after the release of <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/batman-v-superman-dawn-of-justice\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice<\/a><\/i> \u2014 but when <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/ben-hur-2016\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Ben-Hur<\/a><\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2015\/10\/battle-of-the-jesus-movies-paramount-bumps-ben-hur-to-a-weekend-in-august-that-was-already-claimed-by-the-shack.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">moved out of the February 26 release date<\/a>, <i>Gods of Egypt<\/i> took the Bible epic\u2019s place.<\/p>\n<p>Alas, <i>Gods of Egypt<\/i> got out of the way of <i>Batman V Superman<\/i> only to get trounced by another superhero movie, the incredible success of which no one saw coming.<\/p>\n<p>Lionsgate, the studio behind <i>Gods of Egypt<\/i>, had hoped their film would launch a new franchise, but that obviously won\u2019t happen now. The question now is whether the demise of this ancient-mythic sword-and-sandals flick will affect Lionsgate\u2019s plans for <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/odyssey\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">The Odyssey<\/a><\/i>, which the studio has also been talking up as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2015\/05\/lionsgate-sees-franchise-potential-in-homers-epic-poems.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">a potential franchise<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/hail-caesar\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Hail, Caesar!<\/a><\/i> dropped off the weekly top ten list in its fourth week at the North American box office.
