The other animated films that had bigger openings were all sequels or, in the case of <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2007\/09\/the-simpsons-movie-vs-pixar-redux.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">The Simpsons Movie<\/a><\/i>, spun off from a popular TV show.<\/p>\n<p>The previous best animated Disney opener was <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/frozen\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Frozen<\/a><\/i>, which earned $67.4 million in its first weekend of wide release back in 2013. However, because that film went wide on a Wednesday, it actually earned $93.9 million by the end of its first Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Two other films had wide releases this week.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>London Has Fallen<\/b><\/i> opened to $21.7 million, which was better than the opening for last week\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Actor&amp;id=gerardbutler.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Gerard Butler<\/a> vehicle <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/gods-of-egypt\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Gods of Egypt<\/a><\/i>, but not as good as the openings for <i>Olympus Has Fallen<\/i> or its rival <i>White House Down<\/i> three years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Tina Fey\u2019s <i><b>Whiskey Tango Foxtrot<\/b><\/i> struggled to gross $7.6 million.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the fact that three new films opened ahead of it, <i><b>Risen<\/b><\/i> \u2014 which earned $3.9 million this week \u2014 dropped only two spots, from fourth place last week to sixth place this week. <i><b>Kung Fu Panda 3<\/b><\/i>, which used to be ahead of <i>Risen<\/i>, had a steeper drop and fell to seventh place, no doubt due in part to competition from <i>Zootopia<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><i>Risen<\/i> has now grossed $28.7 million altogether in North America, as well as another $374,378 overseas, for a combined worldwide gross of $29 million.<\/p>\n<p>In other news, superhero comedy <i><b>Deadpool<\/b><\/i> earned another $16.4 million in North America in its fourth week, thereby raising its domestic total to $311.2 million.<\/p>\n<p>The film still ranks third among R-rated movies in North America. It is ahead of where <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/passion-of-the-christ\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">The Passion of the Christ<\/a><\/i> (total domestic gross: $370.8 million) and <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/american-sniper\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">American Sniper<\/a><\/i> (total domestic gross: $350.1 million) were in <i>their<\/i> fourth weeks, but its fourth-week take was lower than theirs, so it might fall behind them in the weeks to come.<\/p>\n<p><i>Deadpool<\/i> has earned another $362.1 million overseas, for a worldwide total of $673.2 million. Overseas, among American R-rated films, it is behind only <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/matrix-reloaded\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">The Matrix Reloaded<\/a><\/i> ($460.6 million), <i>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/i> ($404.8 million) and <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/troy\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Troy<\/a><\/i> ($364 million).<sup>1<\/sup> Worldwide, it is second only to <i>The Matrix Reloaded<\/i> ($742.1 million).<\/p>\n<p>Now for a little more data about <i>Risen<\/i> and where it sits relative to similar films:<\/p>\n<p><i>Risen<\/i> already had the fourth-best <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2016\/02\/box-office-risen-is-the-weeks-top-new-film-and-deadpool-takes-aim-at-the-passion-of-the-christs-r-rated-record.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">first weekend<\/a> and the seventh-best <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2016\/02\/box-office-risen-drops-gods-of-egypt-flops-and-deadpool-becomes-the-3rd-biggest-r-rated-movie-ever-worldwide.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">second weekend<\/a> of any <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/genres\/chart\/?id=christian.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cfaith-based\u201d film<\/a>, and now it has the ninth-best third weekend:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>2004 \u2014 <i>The Passion of the Christ<\/i> \u2014 $32.1
