At the end of an article on the studio\u2019s latest project, the <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/hr\/content_display\/world\/news\/e3i989acc6090241ec6766fdf41e3fc2089\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Hollywood Reporter<\/a><\/i> notes:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Other projects on UFA\u2019s new slate include \u201cJesus Loves Me,\u201d a romcom based on David Safier\u2019s bestseller and \u201cProtoyp,\u201d a skewed take on the Garden of Eden story, adapted from the comic book by cult author Ralf Konig.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The German publisher of <i>Jesus Loves Me<\/i>, aka <i>Jesus Liebt Mich<\/i>, summarizes the book\u2019s premise <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rowohlt.de\/sixcms\/detail.php?id=2466494&amp;template=rr_verlag_fr_detail\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">like so<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Marie has an astonishing talent for falling in love with the wrong types of guys. Shortly after her wedding is cancelled, she meets a carpenter. He\u2019s different from all the other men she knew before \u2014 sensitive, selfless and attentive. Unfortunately, on their first date, he tells her that he is Jesus. At first Marie thinks he\u2019s got a few bats in his belfry, but the carpenter\u2019s story turns out to be true. He truly is the Messiah, who\u2019s returned to earth ahead of the Day of Judgement. Marie is left asking herself not whether the world will come to an end next Tuesday, but whether she\u2019s fallen for the wrongest sort of guy of them all.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sounds sort of like a cross between Hal Hartley\u2019s <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/07\/hal-hartley-and-netflix-exclusives.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Book of Life<\/a><\/i> (1998) and the <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/10\/jesus-picks-up-tourist-in-ten.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Gretchen Mol segment<\/a> in David Wain\u2019s <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/07\/christian-ventriloquists-turn-down-ten.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Ten<\/a><\/i> (2007).  A similar romantic comedy called <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/12\/newsbites-prodigal-dreamgirls-compass.html#1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Prodigal Son<\/a><\/i> was also being developed by Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment a couple years ago.<\/p>\n<p>As for <i>Prototyp<\/i>, Ralf K\u00f6nig has a blurb about the comic book on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ralf-koenig.de\/comic.php?u=6&amp;info=buecher#bid318\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">his website<\/a>, but it\u2019s in German, so I can\u2019t read it.  Given his biography at <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ralf_K%C3%B6nig\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Wikipedia<\/a>, though, I think it\u2019s safe to believe the <i>Hollywood Reporter<\/i> when it says that <i>Prototyp<\/i> has a \u201cskewed\u201d take on its biblical source material.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The German studio UFA Cinema seems to have a special interest in movies with a subversive take on biblical themes and characters.
