On the one hand, it is directed by Timur Bekmambetov, an action-movie stylist and horror-film producer best-known for <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2008\/06\/movies-that-taunt-their-audiences.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Wanted<\/a><\/i> and <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/abraham-lincoln-vampire-hunter\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter<\/a><\/i>. On the other hand, it counts \u201cfaith-based\u201d power couple Mark Burnett and Roma Downey \u2014 creators of <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/bible-2013\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">The Bible<\/a><\/i> and <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/ad-beyond-the-bible\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">A.D. The Bible Continues<\/a><\/i> \u2014 among its producers.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Paramount has now released the first trailer for the film, and for now, it looks like the studio is emphasizing the film\u2019s Bekmambetovian side: it opens with a sea battle, it finishes with a chaotic chariot race, and in-between there is lots of action involving fists and blades. The new poster also carries the tagline \u201cFirst to finish. Last to die.\u201d What glimpses we see of the story\u2019s biblical elements are very, very brief.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the trailer:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"BEN-HUR Trailer (2016) - Paramount Pictures\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gLJdzky63BA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>And here is a shorter version that was released overseas:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ben-Hur | Trailer #1 | Paramount Pictures UK\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/j-RSgSqnIxE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The filmmakers haven\u2019t overlooked the \u201cfaith-based\u201d angle altogether, though. Today Burnett and Downey unveiled a \u201cfaith resources website\u201d at <a href=\"http:\/\/sharebenhur.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">ShareBenHur.com<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kmUkrowOfwo<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the trailer, there are a few points worth noting.<\/p>\n<p>First, remember how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2015\/08\/a-brief-note-on-two-important-characters-whose-presence-in-the-new-version-of-ben-hur-has-not-yet-been-confirmed.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">I wondered<\/a> why we hadn\u2019t heard any official announcements regarding the character Quintus Arrius or who might be playing him? Well, he\u2019s there in the trailer, bossing the slaves around on the Roman warship\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/03\/benhur-trailer-quintusarrius.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-42453\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/03\/benhur-trailer-quintusarrius-1024x426.png\" alt=\"benhur-trailer-quintusarrius\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-42453\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2026but it appears he is <i>not<\/i> rescued by Judah Ben-Hur during the sea battle. Instead, it appears that Judah makes it to shore and is found by Ilderim all by himself.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/03\/benhur-trailer-mast.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-42455\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/03\/benhur-trailer-mast-1024x426.png\" alt=\"benhur-trailer-mast\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-42455\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/03\/benhur-trailer-beach.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-42454\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/03\/benhur-trailer-beach-1024x426.png\" alt=\"benhur-trailer-beach\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-42454\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So it appears that the subplot in which Quintus liberates Judah and adopts him, thus making him a Roman nobleman, has been written out of the movie.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, there is at least one set of images in this trailer that plays with our knowledge of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/ben-hur-1959\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">1959 version<\/a> of <i>Ben-Hur<\/i>. In that movie, Judah\u2019s ex-friend Messala is mortally wounded when he is dragged behind his chariot and trampled by another racer\u2019s horses. But in this trailer, it is <i>Judah<\/i> who is dragged behind his chariot.<\/p>\n<p>Here is Messala in the 1959 film:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/03\/benhur1959-messala.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-42465\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/03\/benhur1959-messala.png\" alt=\"benhur1959-messala\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-42465\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And here is Judah Ben-Hur in the 2016 film:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/03\/benhur-trailer-chariotdrag.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-42460\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/03\/benhur-trailer-chariotdrag-1024x426.png\" alt=\"benhur-trailer-chariotdrag\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-42460\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Note, also, that Judah seems to become separated from his chariot altogether \u2014 and he narrowly avoids being crushed under a chariot that flips over him\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/03\/benhur-trailer-chariotflip.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-42461\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/03\/benhur-trailer-chariotflip-1024x426.png\" alt=\"benhur-trailer-chariotflip\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-42461\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2026much like a chariot narrowly missed Ramses in <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/exodus-2015\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Exodus: Gods and Kings<\/a><\/i>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/03\/exodus-chariotflip.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-42484\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/03\/exodus-chariotflip-1024x424.jpg\" alt=\"exodus-chariotflip\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-42484\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The trailer also has two very brief glimpses of Jesus on the cross \u2014 and it\u2019s worth noting that this is the first big-screen <i>Ben-Hur<\/i> adaptation to actually show the face of Jesus (the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/ben-hur-2010\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">2010 miniseries<\/a> showed his face, too):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/03\/benhur-trailer-cross-hillside.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-42462\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/03\/benhur-trailer-cross-hillside-1024x426.png\" alt=\"benhur-trailer-cross-hillside\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-42462\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/03\/benhur-trailer-cross-jesus.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-42463\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/03\/benhur-trailer-cross-jesus-1024x427.png\" alt=\"benhur-trailer-cross-jesus\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-42463\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally, we have a brief glimpse of a bed scene \u2014 which is another element that was not in the 1959 film but <i>was<\/i> in the 2010 miniseries. (I don\u2019t think the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/ben-hur-1925\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">1925 film<\/a> had a bed scene, but it did have topless girls tossing flowers in the street.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/03\/benhur-trailer-bed.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-42459\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/03\/benhur-trailer-bed-1024x427.png\" alt=\"benhur-trailer-bed\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-42459\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We also have a poster for the film \u2014 and note how it says the film will be released in 3D. One of the reasons I loved watching the 1959 film, when I was a kid, was because of the bloody sea battle. But the trailer suggests there will be even <i>more<\/i> beatings and slashings in this film than there was in the earlier films; e.g., I don\u2019t recall Charlton Heston ever privately beating up Stephen Boyd.<\/p>\n<p><b>March 20 update:<\/b> The trailer (or parts of it) originally debuted on <i>Entertainment Tonight<\/i>, with an assist from co-star Jack Huston.
