I have long wanted to go through all 22 (or 24?) James Bond<\/a> films and compile a list of the various religious references therein (the hollowed-out Bible in Diamonds Are Forever<\/i>, the priest who crosses himself as the helicopter takes off in For Your Eyes Only<\/a><\/i>, the rescued ancient church in The World Is Not Enough<\/a><\/i>, etc., etc.). But for now, that\u2019s just another item on my to-do list.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the meantime, it seems that someone named Benjamin Pratt<\/a> has written a book on the spiritual and religious themes of the James Bond novels<\/i>, called Ian Fleming\u2019s Seven Deadlier Sins and 007\u2019s Moral Compass: A Bible Study with James Bond<\/a><\/i>. And at least one church has already begun to base a class<\/a> on this book.<\/p>\n

I have no idea what the merits of this particular book might be, but I don\u2019t doubt that there could be a lot of what blogger Carmen Andres<\/a> refers to as \u201cGod-talk\u201d in Fleming\u2019s novels. The first one, Casino Royale<\/i>, devoted an entire chapter to \u2018The Nature of Evil<\/a>\u2018 and Bond\u2019s idea that we needed an \u201cEvil Book\u201d to complement the \u201cGood Book\u201d, i.e. the Bible. And I would be surprised if that was the only novel to have pondered some of the bigger questions.<\/p>\n
