{"id":43895,"date":"2016-04-10T16:36:08","date_gmt":"2016-04-10T23:36:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/?p=43895"},"modified":"2016-04-10T16:36:08","modified_gmt":"2016-04-10T23:36:08","slug":"box-office-melissa-mccarthy-beats-batman-while-zootopia-becomes-one-of-the-top-ten-animated-films-in-north-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2016\/04\/box-office-melissa-mccarthy-beats-batman-while-zootopia-becomes-one-of-the-top-ten-animated-films-in-north-america.html","title":{"rendered":"Box office: Melissa McCarthy beats Batman, while <i>Zootopia<\/i> becomes one of the top ten animated films in North America"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/04\/boss2016-a.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-43952\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/04\/boss2016-a-1024x300.jpg\" alt=\"boss2016-a\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-43952\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was Batman vs. Superman vs. Melissa McCarthy at the box office this week.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><i><b>The Boss<\/b><\/i>, starring McCarthy as an abrasive businesswoman, grossed an estimated $23.5 million <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/weekend\/chart\/?yr=2016&amp;wknd=15&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">between Thursday and Sunday nights<\/a>, which was just enough to take the top spot away from the third week of <i><b>Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice<\/b><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><i>The Boss<\/i> had a smaller opening than most recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?id=melissamccarthy.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">McCarthy vehicles<\/a>, opening a little ahead of <i>Tammy<\/i> (2014, $21.6 million) but behind films that have paired her with the likes of Jason Bateman (<i>Identity Thief<\/i>, 2013, $34.6 million), Sandra Bullock (<i>The Heat<\/i>, 2013, $39.1 million) and Jason Statham (<i>Spy<\/i>, 2015, $29.1 million).<\/p>\n<p><i>The Boss<\/i> may not have much staying power at the box office, as audiences gave it <a href=\"http:\/\/deadline.com\/2016\/04\/the-boss-batman-v-superman-weekend-box-office-hardcore-henry-1201734744\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">a C+ CinemaScore<\/a> and only 51% said they would recommend it to their friends.<\/p>\n<p>But despite those caveats, <i>The Boss<\/i> still edged ahead of <i>Batman v Superman<\/i>, which earned an estimated $23.4 for a cume of $296.7 million after three weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Admittedly, the two films are virtually tied and could reverse their rankings when the actual figures come in tomorrow. But some observers think the superhero movie could fall significantly behind projections this week, just like it did the last two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The other new wide release this week was <i><b>Hardcore Henry<\/b><\/i>, an R-rated action film shot entirely from the point of view of the semi-robotic main character.<\/p>\n<p>The film earned only $5.1 million and ranked fifth for the weekend, which was a few million bucks <a href=\"http:\/\/deadline.com\/2016\/04\/the-boss-hardcore-henry-demoition-batman-v-superman-box-office-preview-1201732456\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">below expectations<\/a> and one of the lowest wide openings for a film produced by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Producer&amp;id=timurbekmambetov.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Timur Bekmambetov<\/a> (ahead of only <i>The Darkest Hour<\/i>, 2011, $3 million) or co-starring <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Actor&amp;id=sharltocopley.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Sharlto Copley<\/a> (previous lowest: <i>Chappie<\/i>, 2015, $13.3 million).<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in other box-office news\u2026<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Zootopia<\/b><\/i> slid slightly to third place this week and earned another $14.4 million to bring its domestic total up to $296 million after six weeks. <i>Zootopia<\/i> is now the 10th-highest-grossing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/genres\/chart\/?id=animation.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">animated film<\/a> ever in North America, and with another $556.5 million overseas, it is still the highest-grossing film <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/yearly\/chart\/?view2=worldwide&amp;yr=2016&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">of the year<\/a> worldwide.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Miracles from Heaven<\/b><\/i> grossed $4.8 million and ranked sixth in its fourth week, for a domestic total of $53.9 million. It has earned another $3.1 million overseas.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>God\u2019s Not Dead 2<\/b><\/i> \u2014 which narrowly beat <i>Miracles from Heaven<\/i> last week \u2014 fell behind that film in its second week to gross $4.3 million and rank seventh, for a domestic total of $14.1 million. The film has earned another $9,606 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/movies\/?page=intl&amp;id=godsnotdead2.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">in South Korea<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>The Young Messiah<\/b><\/i> grossed only $7,000 in 41 theatres in its fifth week. It has earned $6.4 million in North America and another $683,833 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/movies\/?page=intl&amp;id=christthelord.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">overseas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There were no estimates for <i><b>Risen<\/b><\/i> in its eighth week.
