{"id":43966,"date":"2016-04-11T22:37:39","date_gmt":"2016-04-12T05:37:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/?p=43966"},"modified":"2016-04-11T22:37:39","modified_gmt":"2016-04-12T05:37:39","slug":"ben-hur-release-date-gets-bumped-to-a-later-week-in-august","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2016\/04\/ben-hur-release-date-gets-bumped-to-a-later-week-in-august.html","title":{"rendered":"<i>Ben-Hur<\/i> release date gets bumped to a later week in August"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/04\/benhur-faithtrailer-1-a.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-44105\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/04\/benhur-faithtrailer-1-a-1024x284.png\" alt=\"benhur-faithtrailer-1-a\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-44105\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Uh-oh. <a href=\"http:\/\/deadline.com\/2016\/04\/paramount-cinemacon-florence-foster-jenkins-ben-hur-1201735876\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Deadline<\/a> is reporting that the new version of <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/ben-hur-2016\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Ben-Hur<\/a><\/i> \u2014 which was once going to come out February 26 \u2014 has been bumped from its August 12 release date.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The film will now open a week later, on August 19.<\/p>\n<p>This is worrying if <i>Ben-Hur<\/i> is meant to be any sort of wide release, as the last weeks of summer are generally regarded as something of a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dump_months\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">dead zone<\/a> for mainstream films.<\/p>\n<p>A number of films <i>have<\/i> done very well in the <i>first<\/i> two weeks <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/alltime\/weekends\/month\/?mo=08&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">of August<\/a> in recent years, but it has proved a lot harder to find an audience in the <i>second<\/i> half of the month.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the best second-half-of-August openings so far:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/inglourious-basterds\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Inglourious Basterds<\/a><\/i> (Aug 21, 2009) \u2014 $38.1 million opening \u2014 $120.5 million total\n<\/li><li><i>Superbad<\/i> (Aug 17, 2007) \u2014 $33.1 million opening \u2014 $121.5 million total\n<\/li><li><i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/expendables-2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">The Expendables 2<\/a><\/i> (Aug 17, 2012) \u2014 $28.6 million opening \u2014 $85 million total\n<\/li><li><i>The Final Destination<\/i> (Aug 28, 2009) \u2014 $27.4 million opening \u2014 $66.5 million total\n<\/li><li><i>Halloween<\/i> (Aug 31, 2007) \u2014 $26.4 million opening \u2014 $58.3 million total\n<\/li><li><i>Lee Daniels\u2019 The Butler<\/i> (Aug 16, 2013) \u2014 $24.6 million opening \u2014 $116.6 million total\n<\/li><li><i>Mortal Kombat<\/i> (Aug 18, 1995) \u2014 $23.3 million opening \u2014 $70.5 million total\n<\/li><li><i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/40-year-old-virgin\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">The 40-Year-Old Virgin<\/a><\/i> (Aug 19, 2005) \u2014 $21.4 million opening \u2014 $109.4 million total\n<\/li><li><i>Takers<\/i> (Aug 27, 2010) \u2014 $20.5 million opening \u2014 $57.7 million total\n<\/li><li><i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/last-exorcism\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">The Last Exorcism<\/a><\/i> (Aug 27, 2010) \u2014 $20.4 million opening \u2014 $41 million total\n<\/li><li><i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/exorcist-the-beginning\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Exorcist: The Beginning<\/a><\/i> (Aug 20, 2004) \u2014 $18.1 million opening \u2014 $41.8 million total\n<\/li><li><i>Hero<\/i> (Aug 27, 2004) \u2014 $18 million opening \u2014 $53.7 million total<\/li><\/ul>\n<p>And so on. Only four films on this list grossed over $100 million \u2014 a Tarantino film starring Brad Pitt, a couple of early Judd Apatow hits, and <i>The Butler<\/i> \u2014 and I can find only twelve films released at this time of year that grossed even $60 million.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>(The other $60-million-plus grossers are <i>The Expendables 2<\/i>, <i>The Final Destination<\/i>, <i>Mortal Kombat<\/i>, <i>The Cell<\/i>, <i>Bring It On<\/i>, <i>Blade<\/i>, <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/war-room-2015\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">War Room<\/a><\/i> and <i>Uncle Buck<\/i>.)<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know what the budget was on <i>Ben-Hur<\/i>, but I have to imagine that the people behind this film were hoping it would be a bigger hit than most of <i>those<\/i> films.<\/p>\n<p>Granted, the August 12 weekend was already looking pretty crowded with potentially big competitors like the R-rated animated film <i>Sausage Party<\/i> and Disney\u2019s remake of <i>Pete\u2019s Dragon<\/i>. In its new August 19 release date, <i>Ben-Hur<\/i>\u2019s main competition will be the war comedy <i>War Dogs<\/i> and the animated film <i>Kubo and the Two Strings<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the fact that the studio blinked may not be the greatest vote of confidence in the film. Here\u2019s hoping it turns out better than its release date seems to indicate.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:small\">1.
