{"id":4415,"date":"2013-01-09T13:48:19","date_gmt":"2013-01-09T21:48:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/?p=4415"},"modified":"2013-01-09T13:48:19","modified_gmt":"2013-01-09T21:48:19","slug":"hebrew-hammer-sequel-time-traveling-into-both-testaments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2013\/01\/hebrew-hammer-sequel-time-traveling-into-both-testaments.html","title":{"rendered":"<i>Hebrew Hammer<\/i> sequel: time-traveling into both testaments"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2013\/01\/hebrewhammer.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2013\/01\/hebrewhammer-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"hebrewhammer\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4416\"><\/a>The <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewishjournal.com\/hollywood\/article\/hammer_time_again_hebrew_hammer_director_hopes_for_sequel\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jewish Journal<\/a><\/i> reports that writer-director Jonathan Kesselman is looking at making a sequel to <i>The Hebrew Hammer<\/i>, the 2003 \u201cJewsploitation\u201d flick that starred Adam Goldberg as an Orthodox private detective who saves Hanukkah from the evil son of Santa Claus.<\/p>\n<p>In the new film, that detective, whose name is Mordechai Jefferson Carver, would have to deal with a time-traveling Adolf Hitler \u2014 and since the movie\u2019s characters will be jumping around from era to era, the film will feature characters from the Bible, too.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The <i>Journal<\/i> says the film will feature \u201ca cavalcade of notable Jews\u201d, ranging from the biblical heroes Abraham, Isaac and Moses<sup>1<\/sup> to more recent figures like Albert Einstein, Anne Frank and Steven Spielberg (the last of whom directed Goldberg in <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2005\/04\/critiquing-private-ryan.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Saving Private Ryan<\/a><\/i>, but presumably won\u2019t be playing himself in this new movie).<\/p>\n<p>The <i>Journal<\/i> also reports that Goldberg will play Jesus in \u201ca Borscht Belt \u2018Last Supper\u2019 scene featuring Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, Sid Caesar and Larry David.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Goldberg himself spoke to the <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/hebrew-hammer-returns-fight-hitler-408957\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Hollywood Reporter<\/a><\/i> about the proposed sequel:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt didn\u2019t seem the sort of franchise where you would want to see him take on one Jewish holiday after another,\u201d Goldberg told The Hollywood Reporter late last week. \u201cYou want to see him go after the big one. Who\u2019s the Jewish Joker? Hitler. It\u2019s implicit that if we are going to take on Hitler, there\u2019s a time-travel element, so once that widened the scope infinitely, I thought it was important that we hook up with the other big Jew in history: Jesus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And so, The Hebrew Hammer vs. Hitler will see Mordechai Jefferson Carver \u2014 having retired and ceded his place as badass mensch to the young hipster hero Semitic Jewishman \u2014 forced to travel back in time to take down the Nazi leader, with Jesus as his history-correcting sidekick.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Kesselman is currently raising funds for the sequel, which he describes as a cross between <i>History of the World: Part 1<\/i> (1981) and <i>Bill &amp; Ted\u2019s Excellent Adventure<\/i> (1989), through <a href=\"http:\/\/jewcer.com\/project\/the-hebrew-hammer-vs-hitler\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jewcer<\/a>, a sort of Jewish Kickstarter. One could always quibble that Abraham, Isaac and Moses might not technically be <i>Jews<\/i>, per se, since the word \u201cJew\u201d is derived from the tribe of Judah, and both Abraham and Isaac were <i>ancestors<\/i> of that tribe, while Moses was born into the tribe of Levi.
