{"id":44412,"date":"2016-04-17T11:52:15","date_gmt":"2016-04-17T18:52:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/?p=44412"},"modified":"2016-04-17T11:52:15","modified_gmt":"2016-04-17T18:52:15","slug":"box-office-the-jungle-book-exceeds-expectations-while-barbershop-the-next-cut-underperforms-slightly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2016\/04\/box-office-the-jungle-book-exceeds-expectations-while-barbershop-the-next-cut-underperforms-slightly.html","title":{"rendered":"Box office: <i>The Jungle Book<\/i> exceeds expectations, while <i>Barbershop: The Next Cut<\/i> underperforms slightly"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/04\/junglebook-b.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-44466\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/04\/junglebook-b-1024x297.jpg\" alt=\"junglebook-b\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-44466\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Disney got more than the bare necessities at the box office this week.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><b><i>The Jungle Book<\/i><\/b>, a live-action reimagining of the 1967 animated film, grossed an estimated $103.6 million <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/weekend\/chart\/?view=&amp;yr=2016&amp;wknd=16&amp;p=.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">between Thursday and Sunday nights<\/a>, which was way better than the $65 million to $70 million that some observers had <a href=\"http:\/\/variety.com\/2016\/film\/news\/box-office-jungle-book-batman-v-superman-1201751903\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">predicted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It was also better than the openings of other recent live-action Disney remakes such as <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/maleficent\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Maleficent<\/a><\/i> (2014, $69.4 million) and <i>Cinderella<\/i> (2015, $67.9 million), though it was behind the first weekend of <i>Alice in Wonderland<\/i> (2010, $116.1 million).<\/p>\n<p>The film has earned another $187.4 million overseas since opening there last week. It is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/irrfan-khan-why-jungle-book-884232\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">a particularly big hit in India<\/a>, which is where the story is set. (In my corner of Canada, which has a strong South Asian population, the Cineplex theatre chain is offering bonus Scene points if you watch the film dubbed in Hindi.)<\/p>\n<p>Needless to say, the film\u2019s success bodes well for Disney\u2019s other upcoming remakes such as <i>Pete\u2019s Dragon<\/i> (August 12) and <i>Beauty and the Beast<\/i> (March 17, 2017).<\/p>\n<p>And this wasn\u2019t the only good news for Disney this week.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Zootopia<\/b><\/i> is still in the top five after seven weeks, and this week it crossed the $300 million line. The film earned $8.2 million this weekend for a $307.5 million cume.<\/p>\n<p><i>Zootopia<\/i> has earned another $574.8 million overseas, which gives it a global total of $882.3 million and makes it easily the top-grossing film <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/yearly\/chart\/?view2=worldwide&amp;yr=2016&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">of the year<\/a> worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>The film is particularly popular in China, which is apparently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/world\/asia\/la-fg-china-zootopia-20160414-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">disturbing some in the establishment there<\/a> who find the film\u2019s prey-over-predators theme subversive.<\/p>\n<p>The other big new film this week was <i><b>Barbershop: The Next Cut<\/b><\/i>, which landed in second place with $20.2 million \u2014 slightly less than the $20.6 million and $24.2 million that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/franchises\/chart\/?id=barbershop.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">the first two films<\/a> opened to over a decade ago, but better than the $12.8 million that the female-themed spin-off <i>Beauty Shop<\/i> opened to in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>The first two <i>Barbershop<\/i> films had, at the time, the best openings of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Actor&amp;id=icecube.htm&amp;sort=opengross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ice Cube\u2019s career<\/a>. They have since been surpassed by the <i>Ride Along<\/i> and <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/22-jump-street\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Jump Street<\/a><\/i> films. (<i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/are-we-there-yet-2005\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Are We There Yet?<\/a><\/i> also surpassed the total domestic gross of both <i>Barbershops<\/i>.)<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <i><b>Criminal<\/b><\/i> flopped in sixth place with $5.9 million, the lowest opening for a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?id=kevincostner.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Kevin Costner film<\/a> in wide release since 2005\u2019s <i>Rumour Has It\u2026<\/i> ($3.5 million).<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in other box-office news\u2026<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice<\/b><\/i> also crossed the $300 million line in North America this past week. It grossed $9 million this weekend for a domestic cume of $311.3 million. After four weeks in theatres, the superhero flick has still not yet doubled the $166 million that it made in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2016\/03\/box-office-batman-v-superman-breaks-records-deadpool-becomes-the-top-grossing-r-rated-movie-ever-worldwide.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">its first weekend<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><i>Batman v Superman<\/i> has earned another $516 million overseas for a worldwide total of $827.3 million, which is well short of the billion-dollars-plus that the last two <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/franchises\/chart\/?id=dccomics.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Batman films<\/a> made, and that the studio was clearly hoping for here.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Miracles from Heaven<\/b><\/i> grossed $1.9 million and ranked eighth in its fifth week, for a domestic total of $56.9 million. It has earned another $5.2 million overseas.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>God\u2019s Not Dead 2<\/b><\/i> grossed $1.7 million and ranked ninth in its third week, for a domestic total of $17 million. It has earned another $514,942 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/movies\/?page=intl&amp;id=godsnotdead2.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">overseas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There were no estimates for <i><b>Risen<\/b><\/i> in its ninth week. As of Thursday it had grossed $36.7 million in North American and another $7.8 million overseas.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>The Young Messiah<\/b><\/i> grossed only $12,000 in 55 theatres in its sixth week.
