Turns out it isn\u2019t just the chariot racer\u2019s chest that needs protecting.<\/p>\n

Last week<\/a>, I linked to an interview with Timur Bekmambetov in which the Ben-Hur<\/a><\/i> director talked about how the historically-accurate costumes can save lives:<\/p>\n

My costume designer Varvara Avdyushko, she made authentic, historically correct costumes. And it was very strange when we discussed with her that they had leather stripes around their chests, and we were very curious about why they needed these stripes. It looks cool, but how do stripes help you? But she did it, she did these leather stripes, and when the accident happened, and our driver was under the chariot, these stripes saved his life!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Now Entertainment Weekly<\/a><\/i> has run an interview with Ben-Hur<\/i> star Jack Huston in which he says the leather outfits were advantageous in, uh, other areas:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like NASCAR,\u201d Huston says of the race\u2019s top speeds. \u201cThe first day, you\u2019re completely convinced you\u2019re going to die.\u201d<\/p>\n

And just like in that sport, clothes \u2013 in this case, a leather-trimmed costume \u2013 proved absolutely crucial against the massive amounts of stadium sand. <\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why you use leather,\u201d says Huston, laughing. \u201cSo you don\u2019t shred off your privates.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
