There hasn\u2019t been much news on the Ben-Hur<\/a><\/i> front since last Monday\u2019s update.<\/p>\n

However, The Latin Times<\/a><\/i> reports that Paramount has released a new poster for the film in Spanish, to appeal to the Hispanic market.<\/p>\n

They also note that the film has \u201ca major Latin star\u201d playing Jesus, though technically Rodrigo Santoro is from Brazil and thus his native language would be Portuguese.<\/p>\n

The Latin Times<\/i> also claims that Santoro \u201creceived the blessing from Pope Francis to take on this role with the responsibility it requires,\u201d though Santoro did not actually meet the Pope<\/a> until after<\/i> he had started playing the role \u2014 and it seems Santoro was just one of the many the Pope blessed during his regular weekly audience.<\/p>\n

At any rate, there is a lot of precedent for pitching Bible films to the Latino audience.<\/p>\n

Ben-Hur<\/i> producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey have cast actors of Portuguese and\/or Latin American descent as Jesus in their earlier films and TV shows. Portuguese actor Diogo Morgado played Jesus in The Bible<\/a><\/i>, and Argentinian actor Juan Pablo di Pace<\/a> played him in last year\u2019s A.D. The Bible Continues<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n

All three of the Bible movies released in 2014 \u2014 Son of God<\/a><\/i>, Noah<\/a><\/i> and Exodus: Gods and Kings<\/a><\/i> \u2014 were said to be hugely popular with Latin audiences, and Jesus was played by an Hispanic pop star in the recent live musical The Passion<\/a><\/i>. Bible-themed productions have also been huge in Brazil<\/a>, both on TV and in theatres.<\/p>\n

So, expect to see a lot more Latino-aimed promotion where this poster came from.<\/p>\n
