Last Days in the Desert<\/a><\/i> \u2014 starring Ewan McGregor as both Jesus and Satan \u2014 comes to theatres this Friday, and you can still buy tickets to some of the special \u201cevent\u201d screenings<\/a> that are taking place this Thursday. In the meantime, the distributor has released a few new clips from the film, which you can check out below the jump.<\/p>\n
First, here is a clip of Jesus and Satan arguing, via Vanity Fair<\/a><\/i>:<\/p>\n
<\/iframe><\/p>\nThe Austin Film Festival also posted a Q&A with writer-director Rodrigo Garcia which includes two brief clips from the film (Jesus and Satan chat between the 9:32 and 10:02 marks, and Jesus witnesses a clash between the father and his son between the 10:27 and 10:50 marks). Garcia starts talking about the film at the 9:20 mark:<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"On Story: 604 Rodrigo Garcia on Writing Relationships\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rxtPEcbwpUc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\nMeanwhile, a few more interview pieces have popped up since the last update.<\/p>\nDavid Ansen at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/movies\/la-ca-mn-rodrigo-garcia-20160508-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Los Angeles Times<\/a><\/i> wrote a profile of Garcia:<\/p>\n<blockquote>[Garcia\u2019s father Gabriel Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez] wasn\u2019t just any writer; the author of \u201cA Hundred Years of Solitude\u201d was a literary colossus, as iconic in his field as a Frank Sinatra or a Marlon Brando or a Michael Jordan. At his funeral in April 2014 in Mexico City, attended by the presidents of Colombia and Mexico, tens of thousands of mourners paid tribute.<\/p>\n\u201cThere were 10 years of interviews before people stopped asking me about my dad,\u201d Garc\u00eda recalls. \u201cBut everyone always assumed I didn\u2019t want to talk about him. And then when I did junkets for \u2018Albert Nobbs\u2019 nobody asked anymore. And I felt a little sad.\u201d Then, half-jokingly, he adds: \u201cMaybe I made this movie so people would talk about him again.\u201d . . .<\/p>\nIn the film the wily Demon, who delights in messing with Jesus\u2019 head, compares God to a storyteller who\u2019s trying to perfect the Earth by constantly writing and rewriting it, willing to start the universe all over just to change the shape of a branch.<\/p>\n\u201cThat was my riff on how artists work,\u201d Garc\u00eda notes. \u201cThey\u2019re just insatiable. The art comes first. God would perfect the universe at the expense of everything else.\u201d It\u2019s Satan\u2019s way of taunting Jesus with the idea that God doesn\u2019t care about him, only with the story he\u2019s been cast in.<\/p>\nIt wasn\u2019t until Garc\u00eda was halfway through writing his screenplay that the parallels to his own life struck him.<\/p>\n\u201cBoth Yeshua and the boy are trying to find their destiny from under a powerful father. I\u2019m not so blind I don\u2019t see that.\u201d But once he saw it, it became emotionally much harder to write: to keep the focus on his tale, not himself. \u201cWriting the second half was exhausting.\u201d Then he adds with a laugh, \u201cbut my father was not a silent God.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\nMcGregor talked to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/articles\/2016\/05\/08\/ewan-mcgregor-on-how-a-non-believer-found-jesus-in-last-days-in-the-desert.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Daily Beast<\/a> about the film and concluded by talking about his recent directorial debut, American Pastoral<\/i>, which leads to this amusing bit:<\/p>\n<blockquote>McGregor\u2019s eyes lit up as he let out a laugh. \u201cI just realized I answered a question wrong the other day. American Pastoral<\/i> is about a Jewish man called Swede Levov, and somebody asked me, \u2018Is that the first Jewish character you\u2019ve ever played?\u2019 I said, \u2018I think it is!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\u201cBut I just realized: I played Jesus<\/i>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\nMcGregor also spoke to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bigissue.com\/features\/interviews\/6551\/ewan-mcgregor-interview-we-should-all-pay-tax-because-those-are-societys\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Big Issue<\/a> about a few of his films, including this one:<\/p>\n<blockquote>You recently played Jesus in Last Days in the Desert. That must have been difficult to get your head around.<\/b> \nIt was odd. Approaching that role is an unusual situation but I liked it. I just had to try not to think too much about other people\u2019s ideas or expectations. When you\u2019re playing Jesus Christ \u2013 that\u2019s the ultimate in people having pre-conceived ideas on who he is. I tried to focus on playing this man at a particular time in his life. He was trying to communicate with his dad, and it just so happens that his dad was God [laughs].<\/p><\/blockquote>\nMeanwhile, co-star Tye Sheridan spoke to <a href=\"http:\/\/collider.com\/tye-sheridan-ready-player-one-last-days-in-the-desert-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Collider.com<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>In making a movie like this, did you think about the weight of who these characters actually are, or did you try to stay focused on the humanity of it all?<\/b><\/p>\nSHERIDAN: I think you do focus on the humanity and the simplicity of the characters. There\u2019s not a lot of complex dialogue, and everything is very simple, straightforward and on-the-nose, but in a good way. The beats in the story just pop off the page and you understand the conflict. The movie is very easy to follow, but yet, there are underlying themes and messages that some people catch and some people may not. The film is very much a father-son story that is relatable, as well as the ultimate father-son story, if you will.<\/p>\nWhat was it like to work with these actors?<\/b><\/p>\nSHERIDAN: I think everybody was in it for the same reason because we all had a lot of passion for the project and we all love Rodrigo [Garc\u00eda]. Everyone who worked on the film was top-notch, not only in front of the cameras, but behind the cameras. The heads of the departments were all very talented. And it was a small set. It was nice, just getting to know everyone. You had the opportunity to sit down next to Rodrigo or Ewan, and just ask them questions and learn from them. There was so much openness in the collaboration on the set.<\/p><\/blockquote>\nElsewhere, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/faithforward\/2016\/05\/patheos-101-a-qa-with-filmmaker-erik-lokkesmoe\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">Faith Forward<\/a> blog here at Patheos interviewed Erik Lokkesmoe, who is one of the film\u2019s executive producers;
