<\/a><\/p>\nLast Days in the Desert<\/a><\/i> \u2014 starring Ewan McGregor as both Jesus and Satan \u2014 is now playing in a handful of theatres across the U.S. So here\u2019s one last round-up of interviews with the writer-director and actors who made the film.<\/p>\n First, writer-director Rodrigo Garcia spoke to Crave<\/a> (spoiler warning!):<\/p>\n You bring up a point about the visual look about the Pasolini films, for example, but when it came time to decide about your film, were you particularly interested in historical accuracy? What was most important to you visually?<\/b><\/p>\n You know, what is historical accuracy when it comes to the gospels? There are contradictions in the gospels and not everything adds up. I wanted to give an impression of historical accuracy. I didn\u2019t bother to say whether the family were Jews or not. They\u2019re probably not Jews because she has tattoos, and then she burns her husband\u2019s body which is something the Jews wouldn\u2019t do\u2026 although in this case she\u2019s not doing it to burn the body, but to allow the boy to go free.<\/p>\n I mean, you want to suspend disbelief. I think it looks like a world that could have been. The way they\u2019re dressed, the way they live, the way they eat or how they sit. But whether it\u2019s particular to Bedouins or Jews or any other group, I don\u2019t know. I think you want the story to have an air of authenticity to it but\u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Garcia is also briefly quoted in Ann Hornaday\u2019s Washington Post<\/a><\/i> article on \u2018The rise of Christian movies for the rest of us\u2019:<\/p>\n Although Garc\u00eda \u2014 who grew up in Mexico City, the son of novelist Gabriel Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez \u2014 isn\u2019t devout, he quickly realized that \u201cif Jesus is in your movie, your movie\u2019s about Jesus.\u201d Accordingly, \u201cLast Days in the Desert\u201d works both as a timeless narrative about fathers and sons and as a deeply felt interpretation of obedience, self-sacrifice and longing for God\u2019s voice. \u201cI\u2019m not a religious person,\u201d Garc\u00eda said, \u201cbut I\u2019m not free from being awed by the mystery. .\u2009.\u2009. The mystery is still the mystery, and I\u2019m very happy I could explore it in this movie. I think Jesus faced something that every person faces, which is mortality, and the fact that we live in time and that life ends \u2014 it ended for Jesus, for his human side, at least \u2014 which is a stunning fact.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n And he also did a podcast interview<\/a> with Patheos blogger Christian Piatt<\/a>.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Ciaran Hinds, who plays the \u201cfather\u201d, spoke to Metro<\/a><\/i>:<\/p>\n Hinds has some connection to the film\u2019s religious side. Born in Northern Ireland in the early \u201950s, he was brought up Catholic. \u201cI was an altar boy and all that. Now I\u2019m a lapsed Catholic,\u201d he recalls. \u201cBut I salute people of faith. I\u2019m not particularly happy with huge, organized religion, because I think it\u2019s a personal matter. But I do understand these organizations exist to help people.\u201d He\u2019s not crazy about the extreme sects. \u201cMy relationship to fundamental religion is a quiet despising of them, because they tolerate and brook no other ideas.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Tye Sheridan, who plays the \u201cson\u201d, spoke to Uproxx<\/a>:<\/p>\n What was your initial impression of Garc\u00eda\u2019s script?<\/b><\/p>\n I remember meeting with Rodrigo \u2014 I was probably 16 at the time, cocky 16-year-old from Texas \u2014 and I sat down with Rodrigo and he said, \u201cI\u2019m making this film and it\u2019s a father and son story.\u201d He started telling me about it and he said, \u201cYou would play the son of this man who is tied to his land and his home and you\u2019re very rebellious, you want to get out and break away from everything that that stands for.\u201d He asked me if I wanted to do it and I said, \u201cYeah, that sounds great.\u201d And I asked him about an accent and he said, \u201cWell, as long as you don\u2019t sound too Texan you\u2019ll be fine.\u201d And so when I read the script I fell in love with it immediately. I think this film is very much a coming of age story about being a man, what it means to be a man, what it means to have your own intentions and desires in life, and where you draw the line between family and your internal desires. I have a very strong relationship with my father, [my character] does as well. I think for generations what one man means to another is almost unexplainable but in the movie you get a sense of what that means, that relationship between a father and a son.
