charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/06\/teenagemutantninjaturtles-a.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-47000\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/06\/teenagemutantninjaturtles-a-1024x298.jpg\" alt=\"teenagemutantninjaturtles-a\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-47000\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Out with the old mutants, in with the new.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><i><b>Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows<\/b><\/i> topped the box office <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/weekend\/chart\/?view=&amp;yr=2016&amp;wknd=23&amp;p=.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">this weekend<\/a> with an estimated $35.3 million between Thursday and Saturday nights \u2014 barely half of the $65.6 million that the last <i>Turtles<\/i> opened to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/franchises\/chart\/?id=teenagemutantninjaturtles.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">in 2014<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, last week\u2019s box-office champ \u2014 <i><b>X-Men: Apocalypse<\/b><\/i>, which is based on a very different sort of comic book about mutants \u2014 earned $22.3 million, which represents a drop of 66.1% since the film\u2019s already-soft opening <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2016\/05\/box-office-x-men-alice-sequels-top-the-box-office-but-have-softer-openings-than-expected.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">last week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With the notable exception of <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/captain-america-civil-war\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Captain America: Civil War<\/a><\/i> \u2014 and possibly <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/deadpool\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Deadpool<\/a><\/i>, which doesn\u2019t really count \u2014 sequels have not been doing very well this year.<\/p>\n<p><i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/neighbors=2-sorority-rising\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising<\/a><\/i>, <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/huntsman-winters-war\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">The Huntsman: Winter\u2019s War<\/a><\/i>, <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/gods-not-dead-2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">God\u2019s Not Dead 2<\/a><\/i>, <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/my-big-fat-greek-wedding\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2<\/a><\/i> and <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/divergent\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">The Divergent Series: Allegiant<\/a><\/i> have all grossed only a fraction of what their predecessors made, while <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/kung-fu-panda-3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Kung Fu Panda 3<\/a><\/i>, <i>Ride Along 2<\/i>, <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/london-has-fallen\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">London Has Fallen<\/a><\/i>, <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/barbershop-the-next-cut\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Barbershop: The Next Cut<\/a><\/i> and <i>Zoolander 2<\/i> have also made less money than the films that preceded them within their respective franchises.<\/p>\n<p>And then there is <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/batman-v-superman-dawn-of-justice\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice<\/a><\/i>, which admittedly did do a bit better than <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/man-of-steel\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Man of Steel<\/a><\/i> \u2014 the film it is a direct sequel to \u2014 but it was also the first Batman movie in a decade that failed to gross a billion dollars worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>So the newest <i>Turtles<\/i> and <i>X-Men<\/i> films may be part of that general downward trend.<\/p>\n<p><i>Turtles<\/i> has earned another $34 million overseas for a global total of $69.3 million.<\/p>\n<p>And <i>Apocalypse<\/i> has grossed $116.5 million to date in North America and $286 million overseas, for a global total of $402.5 million. Overseas, the film has outgrossed every other <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/franchises\/chart\/?id=xmen.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\"><i>X-Men<\/i> movie<\/a> except for <i>Deadpool<\/i> and <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/x-men-days-of-future-past\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Days of Future Past<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Third place this week went to the right-to-die romance <i><b>Me Before You<\/b><\/i>, which earned $18.3 million in its first weekend. The film stars Emilia Clarke as a woman who befriends a wealthy, disabled man (Sam Claflin) who plans to end his life.<\/p>\n<p>The weekend\u2019s other big new film was the pop-music parody <i><b>Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping<\/b><\/i>, which earned $4.6 million and landed in eighth place.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s slightly less than the $5.3 million that <i>Hot Rod<\/i> \u2014 the first film produced by Andy Samberg\u2019s The Lonely Island comedy troupe \u2014 opened to in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in other box-office news\u2026<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Zootopia<\/b><\/i> finally fell out of the weekly top ten in North America, but it also became the second movie of the year to gross a billion dollars worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>The film grossed $790,000 in its fourteenth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $337.2 million. The film has earned another $662.8 million overseas.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Alice through the Looking Glass<\/b><\/i> earned $10.7 million and ranked fourth in its second week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $50.8 million. The film has earned another $125.5 million overseas for a global total of $176.3 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>The Angry Birds Movie<\/b><\/i> earned $9.8 million and ranked fifth in its third week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $86.7 million. The film has earned another $196.8 million overseas for a global total of $283.5 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Captain America: Civil War<\/b><\/i> earned $7.6 million and ranked sixth in its fifth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $388.9 million. The film has earned another $742.6 million overseas for a global total of $1,131.5 million \u2014 which currently makes it the 12th-highest-grossing film <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/alltime\/world\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">of all time worldwide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>The Jungle Book<\/b><\/i> grossed $4.2 million and ranked ninth in its eighth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $347.5 million. The film has earned another $547.6 million overseas for a global total of $895.1 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Love &amp; Friendship<\/b><\/i> grossed $2.2 million and ranked 11th in its fourth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $7 million. The film has earned another $493,283 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/movies\/?page=intl&amp;id=lovefriendship.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">overseas<\/a> for a global total of $7.5 million.<\/p>\n<p>Now for a bit of extra data on <i>Zootopia<\/i>\u2019s ranking among <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/genres\/chart\/?id=animation.htm\"
