{"id":47929,"date":"2016-06-19T13:09:58","date_gmt":"2016-06-19T20:09:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/?p=47929"},"modified":"2016-06-19T13:09:58","modified_gmt":"2016-06-19T20:09:58","slug":"box-office-finding-dory-has-the-best-animated-opening-ever","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2016\/06\/box-office-finding-dory-has-the-best-animated-opening-ever.html","title":{"rendered":"Box office: <i>Finding Dory<\/i> has the best animated opening ever"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/06\/findingdory-a.jpeg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-47989\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/06\/findingdory-a-1024x321.jpeg\" alt=\"findingdory-a\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-47989\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Disney films hit a couple of significant milestones <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/weekend\/chart\/?view=&amp;yr=2016&amp;wknd=25&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">this week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->First, <i><b>Finding Dory<\/b><\/i> had the biggest debut in the history of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/genres\/chart\/?id=animation.htm&amp;sort=opengross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">animated films<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The film, a sequel to Pixar\u2019s classic <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/finding-nemo\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Finding Nemo<\/a><\/i>, earned an estimated $136.2 million this weekend, beating the $121.6 million that <i>Shrek the Third<\/i> opened to in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>The last time a Disney-Pixar film held this record was when <i>Finding Nemo<\/i> opened to $70.3 million in 2003. That record was broken by <i>Shrek 2<\/i>, which opened to $108 million in 2004, and then <i>Shrek the Third<\/i> broke <i>that<\/i> film\u2019s record in 2007.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The previous best opening for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/franchises\/chart\/?view=main&amp;id=pixar.htm&amp;sort=opengross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">a Pixar film<\/a> was the $110.3 million that <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/toy-story-3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Toy Story 3<\/a><\/i> opened to in 2010. <i>Finding Dory<\/i> has also made more money in one weekend than the last Pixar film, <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/good-dinosaur\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">The Good Dinosaur<\/a><\/i>, made in its entire theatrical run.<\/p>\n<p>The other big Disney news this week is that <i><b>Captain America: Civil War<\/b><\/i> became the first film this year to gross over $400 million in North America.<\/p>\n<p>The film \u2014 which ranked tenth in its seventh week \u2014 has earned $401.3 million so far in North America and another $743.6 million overseas, for a global total of $1,144.9 million, which makes it the 12th-highest-grossing film <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/alltime\/world\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">of all time worldwide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The other major wide release this week was <i><b>Central Intelligence<\/b><\/i>, an action comedy starring Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart. It grossed an estimated $34.5 million.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the tenth-best opening for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Actor&amp;id=rock.htm&amp;sort=opengross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">a film with Dwayne Johnson<\/a>, but it\u2019s the fourth-best opening for a Dwayne Johnson film that wasn\u2019t a sequel, and it\u2019s the second-best opening for a non-sequel in which he had a lead role, behind <i>San Andreas<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><i>Central Intelligence<\/i> also has the fifth-best opening for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Actor&amp;id=kevinhart.htm&amp;sort=opengross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">a film with Kevin Hart<\/a>, and it\u2019s his best opening overall outside of the <i>Scary Movie<\/i> and <i>Ride Along<\/i> franchises.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in other box-office news\u2026<\/p>\n<p><b><i>The Conjuring 2<\/i><\/b> earned $15.6 million and ranked third in its second week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $71.7 million. The film has earned another $116.2 million overseas for a global total of $187.9 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Now You See Me 2<\/b><\/i> earned $9.7 million and ranked fourth in its second week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $41.4 million. The film has earned another $49.7 million overseas for a global total of $91.1 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Warcraft<\/b><\/i> earned $6.5 million and ranked fifth in its second week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $37.7 million. The film has earned another $339.9 million overseas for a global total of $377.6 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>X-Men: Apocalypse<\/b><\/i> earned $5.21 million and ranked sixth in its fourth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $146.1 million. The film has earned another $364.1 million overseas for a global total of $510.1 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows<\/b><\/i> earned $5.2 million and ranked seventh in its third week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $71.9 million. The film has earned another $70.8 million overseas for a global total of $142.7 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Me Before You<\/b><\/i> earned $4.2 million and ranked eighth in its third week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $46.4 million. The film has earned another $36 million overseas for a global total of $82.4 million.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, <i><b>Alice through the Looking Glass<\/b><\/i> earned $3.6 million and ranked ninth in its fourth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $69.3 million. Prior to that, the record was held by: <i>Shrek 2<\/i> (2004-2007), <i>Finding Nemo<\/i> (2003-2004), <i>Monsters Inc.<\/i> (2001-2003), <i>Toy Story 2<\/i> (1999-2001), <i>The Lion King<\/i> (1994-1999), <i>Aladdin<\/i> (1992-1994), <i>Beauty and the Beast<\/i> (1991-1992), <i>The Land Before Time<\/i> (1988-1991), <i>An American Tail<\/i> (1986-1988), <i>The Black Cauldron<\/i> (1985-1986), <i>The Care Bears Movie<\/i> (March-July 1985), <i>The Last Unicorn<\/i> (1982-1985) and <i>The Secret of NIMH<\/i> (July-November 1982) \u2014 though those last few films might have had smaller openings than some earlier film that Box Office Mojo hasn\u2019t noted.
