{"id":48446,"date":"2016-06-26T12:51:59","date_gmt":"2016-06-26T19:51:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/?p=48446"},"modified":"2016-06-26T12:58:03","modified_gmt":"2016-06-26T19:58:03","slug":"box-office-independence-day-flops-dory-keeps-swimming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2016\/06\/box-office-independence-day-flops-dory-keeps-swimming.html","title":{"rendered":"Box office: <i>Independence Day<\/i> and <i>Free State of Jones<\/i> flop while <i>Finding Dory<\/i> and <i>The Shallows<\/i> thrive in the water"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/06\/independencedayresurgence.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-48463\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/06\/independencedayresurgence-1024x383.jpg\" alt=\"independencedayresurgence\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-48463\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>They had 20 years to prepare a sequel \u2026 and it more or less flopped in North America.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><i><b>Independence Day: Resurgence<\/b><\/i> \u2014 which opened over a week before the holiday it\u2019s named for and was not screened for critics in advance, both of which are sure signs that the studio wasn\u2019t confident about the film\u2019s prospects \u2014 is estimated to have grossed only $41.6 million between <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/weekend\/chart\/?view=&amp;yr=2016&amp;wknd=26&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Thursday and Sunday nights<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s less than the $50.2 million that the original film opened to in 1996.<\/p>\n<p>To repeat: the original film opened to over $50 million <i>in 1996 dollars<\/i>, which was the second-biggest opening ever at that time, behind only <i>Batman Forever<\/i>\u2019s $52.8 million. It went on to become the sixth-highest-grossing movie in North America and the second-highest-grossing worldwide (behind <i>Jurassic Park<\/i>), as of 1996.<\/p>\n<p>The sequel, on the other hand, isn\u2019t even in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/alltime\/weekends\/?pagenum=m4050&amp;sort=opengross&amp;p=.htm&amp;order=DESC\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">top 250 openings<\/a> of all time now.<\/p>\n<p>The film is doing better overseas, where it has earned $101.5 million so far.<\/p>\n<p>If any new film was a winner this week, it\u2019s <i><b>The Shallows<\/b><\/i>, a $17 million shark-attack thriller that opened to good reviews and $16.7 million, landing in fourth place.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s one of the best openings ever for the film\u2019s star <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?id=blakelively.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Blake Lively<\/a>, behind only her supporting turns in 2011\u2019s <i>Green Lantern<\/i> and 2010\u2019s <i>The Town<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Free State of Jones<\/b><\/i> fared much more poorly, grossing $7.8 million and landing in fifth place \u2014 the lowest opening for a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Actor&amp;id=matthewmcconaughey.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Matthew McConaughey<\/a> wide release since 2006\u2019s <i>We Are Marshall<\/i> and the lowest opening ever for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Director&amp;id=garyross.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">director Gary Ross<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The big winner this week, of course, was the Pixar sequel <i><b>Finding Dory<\/b><\/i>, which set even more records this week by earning $73.2 million in its second frame.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the best <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/alltime\/weekends\/moreweekends.htm?page=2&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">second-week haul<\/a> of the year (beating <i>Captain America: Civil War<\/i>\u2019s $72.6 million), the best of any animated film ever (beating the $72.2 million that <i>Shrek 2<\/i> earned in 2004), and the eight-best second-week haul of all time.<\/p>\n<p><i>Finding Dory<\/i> has grossed $286.6 million so far in North America and has earned another $110.3 million overseas, for a global total of $396.9 million.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in other box-office news\u2026<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Central Intelligence<\/b><\/i> earned $18.4 million and ranked third in its second week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $69.3 million. The film has earned another $14.3 million overseas for a global total of $83.6 million.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>The Conjuring 2<\/i><\/b> earned $7.7 million and ranked sixth in its third week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $86.9 million. The film has earned another $156 million overseas for a global total of $242.9 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Now You See Me 2<\/b><\/i> earned $5.7 million and ranked seventh in its third week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $52.1 million. The film has earned another $107.7 million overseas for a global total of $159.8 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>X-Men: Apocalypse<\/b><\/i> earned $2.5 million and ranked eighth in its fifth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $151.1 million. The film has earned another $372.7 million overseas for a global total of $523.8 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows<\/b><\/i> earned $2.4 million and ranked ninth in its fourth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $77.1 million.
