Star Trek Beyond<\/a><\/i> isn\u2019t the first Star Trek<\/i> film to feature a new song on its soundtrack, but it just might be the first to put its song front-and-centre in a movie trailer.<\/p>\n
The song in question is Rihanna\u2019s \u2018Sledgehammer\u2019, and this is the trailer:<\/p>\n
<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>You can listen to the complete single via Spotify:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.spotify.com\/?uri=spotify%3Aalbum%3A1kv0MtCYndTXtkdzvGHkMx\" width=\"300\" height=\"80\" frameborder=\"0\" allowtransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It is not clear to me whether this song was actually written <i>for<\/i> the film or whether the filmmakers are simply taking advantage of the fact that Rihanna has a new song to promote. Maybe Spock and Uhura have a big break-up scene or something.<\/p>\n<p>Some websites have claimed that this is the first new pop song to be featured on a <i>Star Trek<\/i> soundtrack, but that\u2019s not quite true; the jazz fusion band Hiroshima recorded a song called \u2018The Moon Is a Window to Heaven\u2019 for <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/star-trek-v-the-final-frontier\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Star Trek V: The Final Frontier<\/a><\/i> way back in 1989, and bits of that song can be heard in the Paradise City saloon and when Uhura performs a striptease to distract the followers of Sybok.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the song; the striptease scene does not appear to be on YouTube:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.spotify.com\/?uri=spotify%3Atrack%3A6pQ8Og36a3Ee0OZjidYBA7\" width=\"300\" height=\"80\" frameborder=\"0\" allowtransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Other <i>Star Trek<\/i> soundtracks have had instrumental pop covers of the themes written for those films, though the pop versions generally didn\u2019t appear in the films.<\/p>\n<p>For example, The Yellowjackets recorded two tracks for <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/star-trek-iv-the-voyage-home\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home<\/a><\/i>, one of which \u2014 \u2018Ballad of the Whale\u2019 \u2014 was basically an \u201980s jazz version of the Oscar-nominated theme music written by Leonard Rosenman for that film:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fbtMicT61rY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>And then there was this synth-y riff on the theme music that James Horner wrote for <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/star-trek-ii-the-wrath-of-khan\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan<\/a><\/i> and <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/star-trek-iii-the-search-for-spock\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Star Trek III: The Search for Spock<\/a><\/i>:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5QLAIg18K2k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll see how big a role Rihanna\u2019s song plays in the new film when it opens July 22.<\/p>\n<p><b>June 29 update:<\/b> Paramount has now released a featurette on Rihanna herself:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Star Trek Beyond (2016) - Rihanna Featurette - Paramount Pictures\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fnS44Vg40WE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The studio also issued a press release announcing that the music video for Rihanna\u2019s song will premiere in IMAX theatres tomorrow. It is reportedly the first music video to be shot entirely with IMAX cameras.
