But it turns out that even those estimates were optimistic, as the film is now estimated to have grossed a mere $11.4 million <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/weekend\/chart\/?view=&amp;yr=2016&amp;wknd=34&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">since Thursday night<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To put this in perspective, that\u2019s less than the $11.8 million that <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/resurrection-aiello\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Risen<\/a><\/i> opened to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2016\/02\/box-office-risen-is-the-weeks-top-new-film-and-deadpool-takes-aim-at-the-passion-of-the-christs-r-rated-record.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">back in February<\/a> \u2014 and <i>that<\/i> Bible-themed film cost only $20 million to produce.<\/p>\n<p><i>Risen<\/i> could also claim bragging rights as the top-grossing new movie at the box office when it opened, but <i>Ben-Hur<\/i> can\u2019t even claim <i>that<\/i> much, as it fell behind the arms-dealer comedy <i><b>War Dogs<\/b><\/i> ($14.3 million), which landed in third place, and the animated <i><b>Kubo and the Two Strings<\/b><\/i> ($12.6 million), which came in fourth.<\/p>\n<p><i>Ben-Hur<\/i> currently ranks fifth for the weekend, but it could slip down to sixth place, behind <i>Pete\u2019s Dragon<\/i>, when the final figures come in tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p><i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2016\/08\/could-ben-hur-be-the-biggest-flop-of-summer-16.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Vulture<\/a><\/i> writer Kevin Lincoln says <i>Ben-Hur<\/i> won\u2019t necessarily be the biggest flop of the summer \u2014 that could end up being <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/bfg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">The BFG<\/a><\/i>, which cost $140 million and grossed only $108.9 million worldwide \u2014 but if foreign audiences don\u2019t turn out for <i>Ben-Hur<\/i> the way they did for <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/warcraft\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Warcraft<\/a><\/i> and other underperformers, it could be close.<\/p>\n<p><i>Ben-Hur<\/i>\u2019s opening would actually not be that bad if it were just a niche \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/genres\/chart\/?id=christian.htm&amp;sort=opengross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">faith-based<\/a>\u201d film; it currently ranks seventh among the opening weekends within that genre:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>2004 \u2014 <i>The Passion of the Christ<\/i> \u2014 $83.8 million\n<\/li><li>2014 \u2014 <i>Son of God<\/i> \u2014 $25.6 million\n<\/li><li>2014 \u2014 <i>Heaven Is for Real<\/i> \u2014 $22.5 million\n<\/li><li>2016 \u2014 <i>Miracles from Heaven<\/i> \u2014 $14.8 million\n<\/li><li>2016 \u2014 <i>Risen<\/i> \u2014 $11.8 million\n<\/li><li>2015 \u2014 <i>War Room<\/i> \u2014 $11.351 million\n<\/li><li><b>2016 \u2014 <i>Ben-Hur<\/i> \u2014 $11.350 million<\/b>\n<\/li><li>2011 \u2014 <i>Soul Surfer<\/i> \u2014 $10.6 million\n<\/li><li>2014 \u2014 <i>God\u2019s Not Dead<\/i> \u2014 $9.2 million\n<\/li><li>2011 \u2014 <i>Courageous<\/i> \u2014 $9.1 million<\/li><\/ul>\n<p>The thing is, every other film in that ten-best-openings list cost less than $30 million to produce \u2014 a few of them cost as little as $2-3 million! It was reportedly especially popular <a href=\"http:\/\/moviecitynews.com\/2016\/08\/the-weekend-report-199\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">in Mexico and Brazil<\/a>, i.e. the two countries that held premieres for the film before its American premiere. (One of the film\u2019s co-stars \u2014 Rodrigo Santoro, who plays Jesus \u2014 is from Brazil, which probably helped.)<\/p>\n<p>Time will tell how the film does in other countries where it hasn\u2019t opened yet, most of which \u2014 particularly in Europe \u2014 will be getting it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2638144\/releaseinfo\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">over the next three weeks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in other box-office news\u2026<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Suicide Squad<\/b><\/i> earned $20.7 million and ranked first in its third week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $262.3 million. (It is the first film in the DC Extended Universe to be #1 for three weeks.) The film has earned another $310.4 million overseas for a global total of $572.7 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Sausage Party<\/b><\/i> earned $15.3 million and ranked second in its second week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $65.3 million. The film has earned another $6 million overseas for a global total of $71.3 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Pete\u2019s Dragon<\/b><\/i> earned $11.3 million and ranked sixth in its third week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $42.9 million. The film has earned another $14.2 million overseas for a global total of $57.1 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Bad Moms<\/b><\/i> earned $8.1 million and ranked seventh in its fourth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $85.8 million. The film has earned another $20.6 million overseas for a global total of $106.4 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Jason Bourne<\/b><\/i> earned $8 million and ranked eighth in its fourth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $140.9 million. The film has earned another $137.9 million overseas for a global total of $278.8 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>The Secret Life of Pets<\/b><\/i> earned $5.8 million and ranked ninth in its seventh week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $346.7 million. (The film has now passed <i>Zootopia<\/i> in North America; see the chart below for more info.) The film has earned another $327.8 million overseas for a global total of $674.5 million.<\/p>\n<p>And <i><b>Florence Foster Jenkins<\/b><\/i> earned $4.3 million and ranked tenth in its second week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $14.4 million. The film has earned another $9.8 million overseas for a global total of $24.2 million.<\/p>\n<p>Now for a bit of extra data on <i>Ben-Hur<\/i>\u2019s place among \u201cfaith-based\u201d and Bible
