One year ago, Sony Pictures announced<\/a> that they would be releasing The Lamb<\/i>, an animated film about the first Christmas, on December 8, 2017. Then, two months ago, Sony announced that the film had a new title<\/a> \u2014 The Star<\/i> \u2014 but the release date was still the same. Now, however, it looks like the release date has changed, too.<\/p>\n

I recently snuck a peek at the Sony Pictures Animation<\/a> website to see if there was any new information about The Star<\/i>, and I noticed that the website now gives the film\u2019s release date as November 10, 2017. That\u2019s four weeks earlier than it was before.<\/p>\n

There are currently no films scheduled<\/a> for December 8 at all, so The Star<\/i> could, in theory, have had that date to itself \u2014 but films released in early December tend not to do that well; witness what happened<\/a> to The Nativity Story<\/i> ten years ago<\/a>. (Plus, a little film called Star Wars: Episode VIII<\/i> is set to come out just one week later.)<\/p>\n

Conversely, the first half of November<\/a> might seem a bit early for a Christmas movie \u2014 seasonal hits like How the Grinch Stole Christmas<\/i> have tended to come out just a few days before the American Thanksgiving \u2014 but Pixar is already releasing Coco<\/i> on November 22. So, it makes sense for The Star<\/i> to give itself some space.<\/p>\n

The Star<\/i> is currently sharing the November 10 release date with Red Sparrow<\/i> \u2014 a spy thriller that reunites Jennifer Lawrence and director Francis Lawrence, who worked on the last three Hunger Games<\/a><\/i> films together. The Star<\/i> and Red Sparrow<\/i> will come out one week after Thor: Ragnarok<\/i> and one week before Justice League<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s hoping The Star<\/i> is good enough to sustain the audience\u2019s interest from its release date to Christmas itself, which will be a month and a half later. Of course, all of these release dates could be subject to change\u2026 again, as the case may be.<\/p>\n
