Just a few quick recent news items with a religious hook.<\/p>\n

1. The Toronto Star<\/a><\/i> spoke to Rooney Mara, who is currently promoting three films at the Toronto International Film Festival (Una<\/i>, Lion<\/a><\/i> and The Secret Scripture<\/i>), and along the way it mentions that Mary Magdalene<\/a><\/i> starts shooting next week. Mara, who grew up Catholic but isn\u2019t religious, was reportedly reluctant to star in the film at first, but she says she found the script \u201crevelatory\u201d and \u201cvery different from what I grew up learning about her.\u201d Hopefully this means Mary won\u2019t be a prostitute this time.<\/p>\n

2. Five months ago<\/a>, I mentioned that Steven Spielberg was planning on making The Kidnapping Of Edgardo Mortara<\/i>, a film about a pivotal clash between Jews and Catholics in 19th-century Italy. Now comes word that Harvey Weinstein is planning to produce his own movie about that story, which might be directed by Baltasar Korm\u00e1kur (Everest<\/a><\/i>). Spielberg\u2019s film will star Mark Rylance as Pope Pius IX, while the Weinstein\/Korm\u00e1kur film may star Robert De Niro in that role. The two movies might not be entirely redundant, though; The Hollywood Reporter<\/a><\/i> says the two projects \u201clikely will focus on different years in Mortara\u2019s life.\u201d As ever, we shall see.<\/p>\n

3. Deadline<\/a> reports that CBS has bought a comedy series based on A.J. Jacobs\u2019 book The Year of Living Biblically<\/a><\/i>. The series is being produced by Johnny Galecki (an actor on The Big Bang Theory<\/i>) and written by Patrick Walsh (2 Broke Girls<\/i>).<\/p>\n

September 19 update:<\/b> A bonus quote from SBS TV<\/a> in Australia, in which Rooney Mara talks about reteaming with director Garth Davis after working with him on Lion<\/i>: \u201cI just really loved the idea of returning to work with Garth,\u201d Mara says. \u201cHe\u2019s a very special human being. He\u2019s very tapped into the earth and he\u2019s great at connecting lots of different types of people \u2013 as you can see with the casting of Mary Magdalene<\/i>.\u201d<\/p>\n

September 24 update:<\/b> Another bonus quote, this time from Screen Daily<\/a>:<\/p>\n

As the well-received Lion<\/i> gets its European premiere at Zurich Film Festival<\/i> this week, the actress is currently preparing to star in prestige biopic Mary Magdalene<\/i> opposite Joaquin Phoenix as Jesus.<\/p>\n
