Longtime readers of this blog might recall that Brad Pitt was once attached to a movie about Pontius Pilate. He was said to have abandoned that project two years ago<\/a>, but now comes word via The New York Times<\/a><\/i> that Pitt still wants to make that film.<\/p>\n

Here is the relevant section of Pitt\u2019s interview with Marlon James:<\/p>\n

On the topic of exotic worlds, he mentions a film he\u2019d like to make about Pontius Pilate, mostly because the script, which focuses on a mediocre Roman official stuck in the middle of nowhere with difficult people he doesn\u2019t like, makes him smile. Jesus doesn\u2019t get much screen time. \u201cIt certainly won\u2019t be for the \u2018Passion\u2019 crowd,\u201d he says, which reminds me that Mel Gibson\u2019s torture-porn epic is one of the things that drove me out of the church. Pitt bursts into laughter. \u201cI felt like I was just watching an L. Ron Hubbard propaganda film.\u201d<\/p>\n

Xenu aside, Gibson movies typically do one thing really well: violence. \u201cOh, extremely well,\u201d Pitt says. \u201c\u2009\u2018Apocalypto\u2019 is a great film.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It\u2019s interesting that Pitt says the film \u201cwon\u2019t be for the \u2018Passion\u2019 crowd.\u201d I read a draft of the script a couple years ago, and it had a sex scene between Pilate and Mary Magdalene (who is, sigh, portrayed as a prostitute again) as well as some nods to the Gnostic gospels that probably wouldn\u2019t play very well to the \u201cfaith-based\u201d crowd. But that doesn\u2019t mean the film won\u2019t find support in some<\/i> parts of the Christian world; The Wall Street Journal<\/i> reported in March 2014<\/a> that a Hollywood prayer group was asking its members to pray that Pitt would have \u201cthe wisdom to take the role.\u201d<\/p>\n

As ever, we\u2019ll just have to wait and see if the film gets made. But after the relatively low-profile Jesus films of the past year, it\u2019s refreshing to know that some A-list actors are still interested in this material, whatever spin they might want to put on it.<\/p>\n
