1.<\/a> Disney has definitely caught the 3-D bug. Not only are they releasing eight brand-new films in that format over the next two years, and not only are they converting<\/a> the first two Toy Story<\/a><\/i> movies to the third dimension, they have now announced plans to give the hand-drawn Beauty and the Beast<\/a><\/i> (1991) a 3-D makeover within that same timeframe. The film, which to this day remains the only animated movie to have been nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture, was previously extended and spiffed up for an IMAX release in 2002. \u2014 Variety<\/a><\/i> (x2<\/a>), Hollywood Reporter<\/a><\/i> (x2<\/a>)<\/p>\n

2.<\/a> Documentaries like Chicago 10<\/i> and Waltz with Bashir<\/i> have begun to make use of animation. In doing so, they have won raves from some critics, but not so much at the box office. \u2014 Variety<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n

3.<\/a> Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who wrote The Life and Death of Peter Sellers<\/a><\/i> (2004) and the first two Chronicles of Narnia<\/a><\/i> (2005-2008), have now been hired to write The First Avenger: Captain America<\/a><\/i> for Marvel Studios. \u2014 Variety<\/a><\/i>, Hollywood Reporter<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n

4.<\/a> The X-Men<\/a> are going back to school! Gossip Girl<\/i> creator Josh Schwartz is going to write X-Men: First Class<\/i>, a movie that focuses on the students at the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning more than the teachers. It is unclear whether this would be another sequel, or a prequel like the upcoming movies about Wolverine<\/a> and Magneto<\/a>, or a reboot altogether. \u2014 Variety<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n

5.<\/a> Magdalena<\/a><\/i> co-star Luke Goss \u2014 who also played the evil Prince Nuada in Hellboy II: The Golden Army<\/a><\/i> and the Persian monarch Xerxes in One<\/a> Night<\/a> with<\/a> the<\/a> King<\/a><\/i> (2006) \u2014 thinks the new movie\u2019s religious elements will make it \u201cpretty sexy . . . For me, it\u2019s almost like \u2018 Da Vinci Code<\/a>\u2019 with substance, and more action.\u201d \u2014 MTV Splash Page<\/a><\/p>\n

6.<\/a> Too many composers. That is the reason the Academy has given for declaring that the score for The Dark Knight<\/a><\/i>, credited to Hans Zimmer<\/a> and James Newton Howard<\/a> among others, is ineligible for an Oscar nomination. \u2014 Variety<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n

7.<\/a> Guillermo del Toro and the Jim Henson Co. are teaming up to produce \u201ca dark, twisted retelling\u201d of Pinocchio<\/a><\/i>, to be rendered in stop-motion animation by director Gris Grimly. \u2014 Hollywood Reporter<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n

8.<\/a> John Lasseter says a new actor has been found for the part of Slinky Dog in Toy Story 3<\/a><\/i>; the character was previously voiced by Jim Varney, who died in 2000. 9.<\/a> The sequel to Happy Feet<\/a><\/i> (2006) will be made in Sydney, Australia. \u2014 The Age<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n

10.<\/a> This news is a year-and-a-half old, but I just stumbled across it the other day: Apparently, at one point, a movie version of Doug TenNapel<\/a>\u2018s computer game The Neverhood<\/a><\/i> (1996) was in the works. I wonder if that is still the case?
