{"id":53284,"date":"2016-10-16T17:45:53","date_gmt":"2016-10-17T00:45:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/?p=53284"},"modified":"2016-10-16T17:45:53","modified_gmt":"2016-10-17T00:45:53","slug":"box-office-the-accountant-balances-the-books-in-north-america-while-inferno-heats-up-ticket-sales-overseas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2016\/10\/box-office-the-accountant-balances-the-books-in-north-america-while-inferno-heats-up-ticket-sales-overseas.html","title":{"rendered":"Box office: <i>The Accountant<\/i> balances the books in North America, while <i>Inferno<\/i> heats up ticket sales overseas"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/10\/accountant-a.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-53289\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/10\/accountant-a-1024x351.jpg\" alt=\"accountant-a\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-53289\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A thriller starring Ben Affleck topped the North American box office this week, but the biggest winner globally was a <i>Da Vinci Code<\/i> sequel that opened overseas.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><i><b>The Accountant<\/b><\/i>, starring Affleck as an autistic hit man, led the way domestically with an estimated $24.7 million <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/weekend\/chart\/?view=&amp;yr=2016&amp;wknd=42&amp;p=.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">between Thursday and Sunday nights<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But <i><b>Inferno<\/b><\/i> \u2014 the third film starring Tom Hanks as a Harvard \u201csymbologist\u201d who uses his knowledge of Renaissance art to thwart a series of global conspiracies \u2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/deadline.com\/2016\/10\/inferno-tom-hanks-accountant-miss-peregringe-foreign-opening-weekend-results-international-box-office-1201837174\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">made more than double that<\/a>, or $50 million, when it opened in 53 markets this week.<\/p>\n<p><i>Inferno<\/i> will open in North America two weeks from now, on October 28.<\/p>\n<p>Back in North America, the new film <i><b>Kevin Hart: What Now?<\/b><\/i> practically tied last week\u2019s #1 film <i><b>The Girl on the Train<\/b><\/i> for second place, with $12 million each.<\/p>\n<p><i>What Now?<\/i> had the best opening of any <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/genres\/chart\/?id=standup.htm&amp;sort=opengross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">stand-up comedy concert movie<\/a> ever, beating the $11.1 million that <i>The Original Kings of Comedy<\/i> opened to in 2000 \u2014 though it bears mentioning that <i>What Now?<\/i> opened in nearly twice as many theatres as any other film in its genre. (<i>What Now?<\/i> opened in 2,567 theatres, whereas the previous record holder, <i>Richard Pryor: Here and Now<\/i>, opened in 1,411 theatres in 1983.)<\/p>\n<p><i>The Girl on the Train<\/i>, for its part, has earned $46.6 million domestically so far, and has earned another $33.1 million overseas, for a global total of $79.7 million.<\/p>\n<p>The weekend\u2019s other new wide release \u2014 <i><b>Max Steel<\/b><\/i>, a superhero flick based on a toy by Mattel \u2014 flopped completely. It landed in 11th place with $2.2 million.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in other box-office news\u2026<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Miss Peregrine\u2019s Home for Peculiar Children<\/b><\/i> earned $8.9 million and ranked fourth in its third week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $65.8 million. The film has earned another $130.9 million overseas for a global total of $196.8 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Deepwater Horizon<\/b><\/i> earned $6.4 million and ranked fifth in its third week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $49.3 million. The film has earned another $27.7 million overseas for a global total of $77 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Storks<\/b><\/i> earned $5.6 million and ranked sixth in its fourth week, thereby raising its domestic total to $59.1 million. The film has earned another $71.6 million overseas for a global total of $130.7 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>The Magnificent Seven<\/b><\/i> earned $5.2 million and ranked fourth in its third week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $84.8 million. The film has earned another $63.9 million overseas for a global total of $148.7 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life<\/b><\/i> earned $4.3 million and ranked eighth in its second week, thereby raising its cume to just under $13.8 million. The film has earned another $58,681 overseas for a global total of just over $13.8 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Sully<\/b><\/i> earned $2.9 million and ranked ninth in its sixth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $118.4 million. The film has earned another $57.2 million overseas for a global total of $175.6 million.<\/p>\n<p>And <i><b>The Birth of a Nation<\/b><\/i> earned $2.7 million (a drop of 61.2% since last week, the steepest in the Top 20) and ranked tenth in its second week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $12.2 million.
