size-large wp-image-53779\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A supernatural superhero reigned supreme at the box office this weekend, while films aimed at younger and older audiences also did well in their box-office debuts.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><i><b>Doctor Strange<\/b><\/i>, the fourteenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, grossed an estimated $84.9 million <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/weekend\/chart\/?view=&amp;yr=2016&amp;wknd=45&amp;p=.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">between Thursday and Sunday nights<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the third-best opening for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/franchises\/chart\/?view=main&amp;id=avengers.htm&amp;sort=opengross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">an MCU non-sequel<\/a>, behind <i>Guardians of the Galaxy<\/i> ($94.3 million) and the original <i>Iron Man<\/i> ($98.6 million).<sup>1<\/sup> It also nearly ties the opening for <i>Thor: The Dark World<\/i> ($85.7 million), which is the only other MCU film besides this one to be released outside of the spring or summer seasons.<\/p>\n<p><i>Doctor Strange<\/i> has also, in one weekend, become the top-grossing film of director <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?id=scottderrickson.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Scott Derrickson<\/a>\u2019s career, beating the $79.4 million that the 2008 remake of <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/?s=day+the+earth+stood+still\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">The Day the Earth Stood Still<\/a><\/i> made during its entire North American theatrical run.<\/p>\n<p>This weekend\u2019s earnings also represent a career-best opening for all six of the film\u2019s above-the-line stars (listed here with their previous personal Strange<\/i> was also released overseas a week ago, and in its first two weeks it has earned $240.4 million internationally for a global total of $325.4 million.<\/p>\n<p>Turning to films that are aimed at younger and older demographics, <i><b>Trolls<\/b><\/i> landed in second place with an estimated $45.6 million \u2014 about average for a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/franchises\/chart\/?view=main&amp;id=dwanimation.htm&amp;sort=opengross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">DreamWorks cartoon<\/a> these days \u2014 while the R-rated <i><b>Hacksaw Ridge<\/b><\/i> landed in third place with $14.8 million, a modest but decent start for the awards-season hopeful.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Finding Dory<\/b><\/i> also passed a new milestone this week as it inched past $1.024 billion <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/yearly\/chart\/?view2=worldwide&amp;yr=2016&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">worldwide<\/a>, thus passing <i>Zootopia<\/i> to become the year\u2019s top-grossing animated film and the second-highest-grossing film overall (behind <i>Captain America: Civil War<\/i>). It is still well behind <i>Zootopia<\/i> overseas, though (see below for more details).<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in other box-office news\u2026<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Tyler Perry\u2019s Boo! A Madea Halloween<\/b><\/i> earned $7.8 million and ranked fourth in its third week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $64.9 million. The film has earned another $645,627 overseas for a global total of $65.6 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Inferno<\/b><\/i> earned $6.3 million and ranked fifth in its second week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $26.1 million. The film has earned another $159.3 million overseas for a global total of $185.4 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>The Accountant<\/b><\/i> earned $5.9 million and ranked sixth in its fourth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $70.9 million. The film has earned another $38.5 million overseas for a global total of $109.4 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Jack Reacher: Never Go Back<\/b><\/i> earned $5.6 million and ranked seventh in its third week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $49.2 million. The film has earned another $62.7 million overseas for a global total of $111.9 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Ouija: Origin of Evil<\/b><\/i> earned $3.9 million and ranked eighth in its third week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $31.4 million. The film has earned another $33.1 million overseas for a global total of $64.5 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>The Girl on the Train<\/b><\/i> earned $2.8 million and ranked ninth in its fifth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $70.7 million. The film has earned another $69.9 million overseas for a global total of $140.6 million.<\/p>\n<p>And <i><b>Miss Peregrine\u2019s Home for Peculiar Children<\/b><\/i> earned $2.1 million and ranked tenth in its sixth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $83.3 million. The film has earned another $170.1 million overseas for a global total of $253.5 million.<\/p>\n<p>Now for a bit of extra data on the year\u2019s top-grossing <a
