{"id":54015,"date":"2016-11-27T22:05:33","date_gmt":"2016-11-28T06:05:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/?p=54015"},"modified":"2016-11-27T22:05:33","modified_gmt":"2016-11-28T06:05:33","slug":"box-office-moana-sails-to-the-top-of-the-charts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2016\/11\/box-office-moana-sails-to-the-top-of-the-charts.html","title":{"rendered":"Box office: <i>Moana<\/i> sails to the top of the charts"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/11\/moana-a.jpeg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-54025\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/11\/moana-a-1024x372.jpeg\" alt=\"moana-a\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-54025\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Disney added another film to its growing list of box-office hits this week.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><i><b>Moana<\/b><\/i>, an animated film about a Polynesian princess who teams up with a demigod to save her island, earned an estimated $55.5 million <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/weekend\/chart\/?view=&amp;yr=2016&amp;wknd=48&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">between Friday and Sunday<\/a> and an estimated $81.1 million in total since opening on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the second-best opening of any film <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/alltime\/weekends\/thanksgiving.htm?page=5dayopen&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">released over the American Thanksgiving<\/a>, behind the $93.6 million that <i>Frozen<\/i> earned in its first five days in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>It is also the best opening of any non-sequel <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Actor&amp;id=rock.htm&amp;sort=opengross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">starring Dwayne Johnson<\/a>, beating the $54.6 million that <i>San Andreas<\/i> opened to last year. (The Friday-to-Sunday portion of <i>Moana<\/i>\u2019s debut ranks fifth among Johnson\u2019s first weekends overall, behind the last three <i>Fast &amp; Furious<\/i> sequels and 2001\u2019s <i>The Mummy Returns<\/i>.)<\/p>\n<p>The news was less good for three other new wide releases this week.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Allied<\/b><\/i>, starring Brad Pitt as a Canadian military intelligence officer who falls for a French resistance fighter during World War II, landed in fourth place with $13 million for the weekend and $18 million since Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the lowest opening for a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Director&amp;id=robertzemeckis.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Robert Zemeckis film<\/a> in wide release since 1992\u2019s <i>Death Becomes Her<\/i> (though it is ahead of last year\u2019s <i>The Walk<\/i>), and one of the lowest openings ever for a wide release with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Actor&amp;id=bradpitt.htm&amp;sort=opengross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Brad Pitt<\/a> in the lead role. <i>Allied<\/i> does, however, have the fifth-best North American opening of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Actor&amp;id=marioncotillard.htm&amp;sort=opengross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Marion Cotillard<\/a>\u2019s career.<\/p>\n<p>In a more quasi-seasonal vein, <i><b>Bad Santa 2<\/b><\/i> landed in eighth place with $6.1 million for the weekend and $9 million since Tuesday night, which is about half of what the original <i>Bad Santa<\/i> opened to in 2003. (The original film <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/weekend\/chart\/?yr=2003&amp;wknd=48&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">opened in fifth place<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>And <i><b>Rules Don\u2019t Apply<\/b><\/i> \u2014 the first film to star Warren Beatty since 2001\u2019s <i>Town &amp; Country<\/i>, and the first to be directed by him since 1998\u2019s <i>Bulworth<\/i> \u2014 landed in 12th place with $1.6 million for the weekend and $2.2 million since Tuesday night. That\u2019s the lowest wide opening for a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Director&amp;id=warrenbeatty.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Warren Beatty film<\/a> since at least the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>A couple of holdovers passed significant milestones this week.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Doctor Strange<\/b><\/i> \u2014 which landed in third place in North America with $13.4 million this weekend \u2014 is now the top-grossing single-character origin story in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/franchises\/chart\/?view=main&amp;id=avengers.htm&amp;sort=opengross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Marvel Cinematic Universe<\/a> worldwide. The film has earned $616 million globally, which puts it ahead of the $585.2 million the previous champ, <i>Iron Man<\/i>, earned in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>The only other MCU non-sequel ahead of <i>Doctor Strange<\/i> worldwide is the ensemble film <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/guardians-of-the-galaxy\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Guardians of the Galaxy<\/a><\/i>, which grossed $773.3 million in 2014.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>And <i><b>Arrival<\/b><\/i> \u2014 which landed in fifth place with $11.3 million, a drop of only 7.3% since last weekend, thereby raising its cume to $62.4 million \u2014 has passed <i>Prisoners<\/i> (2013, $61 million) to become the top-grossing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Director&amp;id=denisvilleneuve.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Denis Villeneuve<\/a> film in North America (though it is still behind <i>Prisoners<\/i> overseas and worldwide).<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in other box-office news\u2026<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them<\/b><\/i> earned $45.1 million and ranked second in its second week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $156.2 million. The film has earned another $317.5 million overseas for a global total of $473.7 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Trolls<\/b><\/i> earned $10.3 million and ranked sixth in its fourth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $135.1 million. The film has earned another $155.9 million overseas for a global total of $291 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Almost Christmas<\/b><\/i> earned $7.6 million and ranked seventh in its third week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $36.7 million. The film has earned another $65,544 overseas for a global total of $36.8 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Hacksaw Ridge<\/b><\/i> earned $5.5 million and ranked ninth in its fourth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $52.2 million. The film has earned another $10.9 million overseas for a global total of $63.1 million.<\/p>\n<p>And <i><b>The Edge of Seventeen<\/b><\/i> earned $2.9 million and ranked tenth in its second week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $10.3 million. The film does not seem to have been released overseas yet.<\/p>\n<p>Now for a bit of extra data on the year\u2019s top-grossing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/genres\/chart\/?id=animation.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">animated films<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>In North America, <i>The Secret
