{"id":54128,"date":"2016-12-04T20:52:05","date_gmt":"2016-12-05T04:52:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/?p=54128"},"modified":"2016-12-04T20:52:05","modified_gmt":"2016-12-05T04:52:05","slug":"box-office-manchester-sea-leads-pack-oscar-hopefuls-limited-release-otherwise-slow-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2016\/12\/box-office-manchester-sea-leads-pack-oscar-hopefuls-limited-release-otherwise-slow-week.html","title":{"rendered":"Box office: <i>Manchester by the Sea<\/i> leads a pack of Oscar hopefuls in limited release in an otherwise slow week"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/12\/manchesterbythesea-a.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-54153\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/12\/manchesterbythesea-a-1024x384.jpg\" alt=\"manchesterbythesea-a\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-54153\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There was very little change among the top ten movies at the box office this week.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The only new wide release this week was the horror film <i><b>Incarnate<\/b><\/i>, which landed in ninth place with an estimated $2.7 million <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/weekend\/chart\/?view=&amp;yr=2016&amp;wknd=49&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">between Friday and Sunday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There was a fair bit of activity happening outside the top ten, though, among the limited releases vying for attention during the build-up to the Oscars.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Manchester by the Sea<\/b><\/i>, a critically-acclaimed drama about a man coping with various losses in his life, landed in 11th place with an estimated $2.3 million from only 156 theatres, thereby raising its cume to $4.4 million in its third week.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><i><b>Loving<\/b><\/i>, about a landmark civil rights case that struck down the laws forbidding interracial marriages in the 1960s, landed in 13th place with an estimated $997,000 from 446 theatres and raised its cume to $5.6 million after five weeks.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Moonlight<\/b><\/i>, about a young man dealing with racial and sexual identity issues at three different points in his life, landed in 14th place with an estimated $915,750 from 574 theatres and raised its cume to $9.9 million after seven weeks.<\/p>\n<p>And <i><b>Jackie<\/b><\/i>, starring Natalie Portman as President Kennedy\u2019s widow, opened in only five theatres and landed in 20th place with an estimated $275,000.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in other box-office news\u2026<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Moana<\/b><\/i> earned $28.4 million and ranked first in its second week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $119.9 million. The film has earned another $57.5 million overseas for a global total of $177.4 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them<\/b><\/i> earned $18.5 million and ranked second in its third week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $183.5 million. The film has earned another $424.4 million overseas for a global total of $607.9 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Arrival<\/b><\/i> earned $7.3 million and ranked third in its fourth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $73.1 million. The film has earned another $32.2 million overseas for a global total of $105.2 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Allied<\/b><\/i> earned $7.1 million and ranked fourth in its second week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $28.9 million. The film has earned another $24.8 million overseas for a global total of $53.7 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Doctor Strange<\/b><\/i> earned $6.5 million and ranked fifth in its fifth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $215.3 million. The film has earned another $419.6 million overseas for a global total of $634.9 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Trolls<\/b><\/i> earned $4.6 million and ranked sixth in its fifth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $141.4 million. The film has earned another $155.3 million overseas for a global total of $296.7 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Hacksaw Ridge<\/b><\/i> earned $3.4 million and ranked seventh in its fifth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $57.3 million. The film has earned another $18.1 million overseas for a global total of $75.4 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Bad Santa 2<\/b><\/i> earned $3.3 million and ranked eighth in its second week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $14.3 million. The film has earned another $1.9 million overseas for a global total of $16.2 million.<\/p>\n<p>And <i><b>Almost Christmas<\/b><\/i> earned $2.5 million and ranked tenth in its fourth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $38.1 million. The film has earned another $76,115 overseas for a global total of $38.2 million.<\/p>\n<p>Next week brings us <i>Office Christmas Party<\/i> and the wide release of <i>Miss Sloane<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:small\">1.
