{"id":54341,"date":"2016-12-26T21:14:36","date_gmt":"2016-12-27T05:14:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/?p=54341"},"modified":"2016-12-26T21:18:52","modified_gmt":"2016-12-27T05:18:52","slug":"box-office-sing-soars-several-new-releases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2016\/12\/box-office-sing-soars-several-new-releases.html","title":{"rendered":"Box office: <i>Sing<\/i> soars over several other new releases"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/12\/sing-a.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-54354\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2016\/12\/sing-a-1024x329.jpg\" alt=\"sing-a\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-54354\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A Disney-owned blockbuster and a non-Disney animated film ruled the box office over the Christmas weekend as a few other new films struggled to find an audience.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><i><b>Sing<\/b><\/i>, an animated film (produced by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/franchises\/chart\/?id=illumination.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Illumination Entertainment<\/a>, the outfit behind <i>Despicable Me<\/i> and <i>The Secret Life of Pets<\/i>) about a musical talent competition, was the top new film of the week, grossing an estimated $35.3 million <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/weekend\/chart\/?view=&amp;yr=2016&amp;wknd=52&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">between Friday and Sunday<\/a> and earning $55.9 million in total since opening on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<p>That was easily the best opening for an animated film <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/alltime\/weekends\/month\/?mo=12&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">released in December<\/a>, beating the $24.2 million that <i>The Princess and the Frog<\/i> opened to in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>But <i>Sing<\/i> was only the second-highest-grossing movie this week. The top spot went to <i><b>Rogue One<\/b><\/i>, which earned $64.4 million over the holiday weekend.<\/p>\n<p><i>Rogue One<\/i> \u2014 which is the second <i>Star Wars<\/i> movie to be made since Disney bought Lucasfilm \u2014 has earned $286.4 million in North America since opening last week, and another $237.4 million overseas, for a global total of $523.8 million.<\/p>\n<p>Three other new wide releases had trouble competing with the two big movies.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Passengers<\/b><\/i>, starring <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Actor&amp;id=chrispratt.htm&amp;sort=opengross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Chris Pratt<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Actor&amp;id=jenniferlawrence.htm&amp;sort=opengross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jennifer Lawrence<\/a> as two people who wake up 90 years early on a spacecraft bound for another planet, landed in third place with $14.9 million for the weekend (and $22.2 million since opening on Tuesday night), which was one of the lowest openings ever for either actor in a lead role.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Why Him?<\/b><\/i> \u2014 a comedy starring <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Actor&amp;id=bryancranston.htm&amp;sort=opengross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bryan Cranston<\/a> as a straitlaced Midwesterner who actively dislikes his daughter\u2019s new boyfriend, a tech billionaire played by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Actor&amp;id=jamesfranco.htm&amp;sort=opengross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">James Franco<\/a> \u2014 opened on Friday and landed in fourth place with $11.1 million.<\/p>\n<p>And <i><b>Assassin\u2019s Creed<\/b><\/i>, a video-game adaptation that reunites <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Actor&amp;id=michaelfassbender.htm&amp;sort=opengross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Michael Fassbender<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Actor&amp;id=marioncotillard.htm&amp;sort=opengross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Marion Cotillard<\/a> with <i>Macbeth<\/i> director Justin Kurzel, landed in fifth place with $10.3 million for the weekend (and $17.8 million since opening Tuesday night).<\/p>\n<p>One other film went into wide release on Christmas Day and landed in the top ten on the strength of its Sunday performance alone.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Fences<\/b><\/i>, an adaptation of the Pulitzer-winning play directed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Director&amp;id=denzelwashington.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Denzel Washington<\/a>, jumped from four theatres to over 2,200 and landed in seventh place with $6.6 million. The film has earned $6.9 million since opening ten days ago.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in other box-office news\u2026<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Moana<\/b><\/i> earned $7.4 million and ranked sixth in its fifth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $180.4 million. The film has earned another $144.5 million overseas, for a global total of $324.9 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>La La Land<\/b><\/i> earned $5.7 million and ranked eighth in its third week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $13.6 million. The film has earned another $17.7 million overseas, for a global total of $31.3 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Office Christmas Party<\/b><\/i> earned $5.1 million and ranked ninth in its third week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $42.2 million. The film has earned another $36.9 million overseas, for a global total of $79.1 million.<\/p>\n<p>And <i><b>Collateral Beauty<\/b><\/i> earned $4.3 million and ranked tenth in its second week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $15.3 million.
