{"id":54727,"date":"2017-01-16T12:49:14","date_gmt":"2017-01-16T20:49:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/?p=54727"},"modified":"2017-01-16T13:10:59","modified_gmt":"2017-01-16T21:10:59","slug":"box-office-hidden-figures-holds-top-spot-six-new-films-fail-find-audience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2017\/01\/box-office-hidden-figures-holds-top-spot-six-new-films-fail-find-audience.html","title":{"rendered":"Box office: <i>Hidden Figures<\/i> holds on to the top spot while six new films fail to find an audience"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2017\/01\/hiddenfigures-2-a.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-54736\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2017\/01\/hiddenfigures-2-a.jpg\" alt=\"hiddenfigures-2-a\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54736\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A drama about three African-American women who broke racial barriers in the early 1960s held on to the top spot at the box office on the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, while half a dozen new wide releases failed to find an audience.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><i><b>Hidden Figures<\/b><\/i>, which focuses on three black women who worked at NASA in its early days, topped the chart for a second straight week with an estimated $20.5 million <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/weekend\/chart\/?yr=2017&amp;wknd=02&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">between Friday and Sunday<\/a> \u2014 a drop of only 10.3% since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2017\/01\/box-office-hidden-figures-nearly-beats-rogue-one.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">last week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That raises the film\u2019s North American total to $54.8 million since its limited release three weeks ago. The film does not appear to have been released overseas yet.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, all of the week\u2019s new wide releases were flops to one degree or another.<\/p>\n<p>The top new film this week was <i><b>The Bye Bye Man<\/b><\/i>, a horror film that landed in fifth place with $13.4 million. That\u2019s somewhat weak for a horror film, but the film could still turn a profit given that it reportedly cost only $7.4 million to produce.<\/p>\n<p>Right behind it was <i><b>Patriots Day<\/b><\/i>, a dramatization of the Boston Marathon bombing that earned only $12 million in its first week in wide release. It had the smallest opening of the three true-story movies that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Director&amp;id=peterberg.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">director Peter Berg<\/a> has made with Mark Wahlberg (the others being <i>Lone Survivor<\/i>, which opened to $37.8 million in 2014, and <i>Deepwater Horizon<\/i>, which opened to $20.2 million <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2016\/10\/box-office-tim-burton-rises-to-the-top-of-a-crowded-market.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">last year<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>That film was closely followed by the big-budget family film <i><b>Monster Trucks<\/b><\/i>, which landed in seventh place with $10.5 million (easily the lowest opening of any film <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Director&amp;id=chriswedge.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">directed by Chris Wedge<\/a>, who had worked mainly in animation prior to this), and the Jamie Foxx thriller <i><b>Sleepless<\/b><\/i>, which landed in eighth place with $8.5 million (the lowest opening of any <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Actor&amp;id=jamiefoxx.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jamie Foxx film<\/a> since 2004\u2019s <i>Breakin\u2019 All the Rules<\/i>).<\/p>\n<p>Two other films went into wide release this week and failed to crack the top ten.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Live by Night<\/b><\/i> landed in 11th place with $5.4 million from 2,822 theatres \u2014 the worst opening of any film <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Director&amp;id=benaffleck.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">directed by Ben Affleck<\/a>, whose previous lowest was the $5.5 million that 2007\u2019s <i>Gone Baby Gone<\/i> opened to in 1,713 theatres.<\/p>\n<p>And Martin Scorsese\u2019s long-awaited adaptation of Shusaku Endo\u2019s <i><b>Silence<\/b><\/i> landed in 16th place with $1.9 million \u2014 one of the worst openings for a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Director&amp;id=martinscorsese.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Scorsese film<\/a> in wide release since weekly box-office stats became a matter of public record.<\/p>\n<p>One film passed a significant milestone this week.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Rogue One<\/b><\/i> landed in fourth place in its fifth week with $13.8 million, thereby raising its domestic cume to $498.9 million. <i>Rogue One<\/i> has now passed <i>Finding Dory<\/i> to become the top-grossing film <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/yearly\/chart\/?yr=2016&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">of 2016<\/a> in North America, and it will soon be only the seventh movie <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/alltime\/domestic.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">ever<\/a> to gross over $500 million in North America.<\/p>\n<p><i>Rogue One<\/i> has earned another $481.1 million overseas and $980 million worldwide. It currently ranks 70th <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/alltime\/world\/?sort=osgross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">overseas<\/a> and 28th <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/alltime\/world\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">worldwide<\/a> on the all-time charts.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in other box-office news\u2026<\/p>\n<p><i><b>La La Land<\/b><\/i> earned $14.5 million and ranked second in its sixth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $74.1 million. The film has earned another $54.8 million overseas, for a global total of $128.9 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Sing<\/b><\/i> earned $13.8 million and ranked third in its fourth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $233 million. The film has earned another $164.3 million overseas, for a global total of $397.3 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Underworld: Blood Wars<\/b><\/i> earned $5.8 million and ranked ninth in its second week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $23.9 million. The film has earned another $46.8 million overseas, for a global total of $70.7 million.<\/p>\n<p>And <i><b>Passengers<\/b><\/i> earned $5.6 million and ranked tenth in its fourth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $90 million.
