{"id":55582,"date":"2017-04-16T23:12:59","date_gmt":"2017-04-17T06:12:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/?p=55582"},"modified":"2017-04-21T11:08:26","modified_gmt":"2017-04-21T18:08:26","slug":"box-office-fate-furious-breaks-records-overseas-worldwide-slips-somewhat-north-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2017\/04\/box-office-fate-furious-breaks-records-overseas-worldwide-slips-somewhat-north-america.html","title":{"rendered":"Box office: <i>The Fate of the Furious<\/i> breaks records overseas and worldwide but slips somewhat in North America"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2017\/04\/fateofthefurious2-a.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-55607\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-55607\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2017\/04\/fateofthefurious2-a-1024x341.jpg\" alt=\"fateofthefurious2-a\" width=\"600\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <i>Fast and the Furious<\/i> franchise set some new records at the box office this week.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><i><b>The Fate of the Furious<\/b><\/i> \u2014 the eighth installment in the 16-year-old series \u2014 grossed an estimated $532.5 million <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/alltime\/world\/worldwideopenings.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">around the world<\/a> this weekend, thereby breaking the record set two years ago by <i>Star Wars: The Force Awakens<\/i> ($529 million).<\/p>\n<p>Of the new film\u2019s global haul, $432.3 million came from overseas \u2014 far surpassing the foreign record set by <i>Jurassic World<\/i> ($316.7 million) \u2014 and $100.2 million <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/weekend\/chart\/?view=&amp;yr=2017&amp;wknd=15&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">came from North America<\/a>, which is hardly a record (the film <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/alltime\/weekends\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">ranks 42nd<\/a> among domestic openings, well behind <i>Furious 7<\/i>\u2019s $147.2 million) but is still pretty good.<\/p>\n<p>The only other new film in the top ten this week was <i><b>Gifted<\/b><\/i>, which stars Chris Evans as a man who gets into a custody battle with his mathematically talented niece\u2019s grandmother. That film, which had a limited release last week, expanded to 1,146 theatres this week and landed in sixth place with $3 million.<\/p>\n<p>Two \u201cfaith-based\u201d films did well at the box office this Easter weekend, too.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>The Case for Christ<\/i><\/b>, which cracked the top ten when it opened in 1,174 theatres <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2017\/04\/box-office-case-christ-cracks-top-ten.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">last week<\/a>, had a slight expansion to 1,386 theatres this week and landed in ninth place with $2.72 million, thereby raising its domestic cume to $8.4 million.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <i><b>The Shack<\/b><\/i> landed in 14th place with $700,000 in its seventh week.<\/p>\n<p><i>The Shack<\/i> had the fourth-best <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2017\/03\/box-office-shack-one-biggest-openings-ever-faith-based-film.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">first<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2017\/03\/box-office-kong-king-shack-healthy-second-week-drop.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">second weeks<\/a> of any \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/genres\/chart\/?id=christian.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">faith-based<\/a>\u201d film, and, if the estimates hold, this week it will have the eighth-best seventh weekend:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>2004 \u2014 <i>The Passion of the The film has earned another $122.6 million overseas, for a global total of $238.9 million.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Beauty and the Beast<\/b><\/i> earned $13.6 million and ranked third in its fifth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $454.6 million. The film has earned another $588.4 million overseas, for a global total of $1.043 <i>billion<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Smurfs: The Lost Village<\/i><\/b> earned $6.5 million and ranked fourth in its second week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $24.7 million. The film has earned another $70.3 million overseas, for a global total of $95 million.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Going in Style<\/i><\/b> earned $6.4 million and ranked fifth in its second week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $23.4 million. The film has earned another $11.7 million overseas, for a global total of $35.1 million.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Get Out<\/i><\/b> earned $2.92 million and ranked seventh in its eighth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $167.5 million. The film has earned another $16 million overseas, for a global total of $183.5 million.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Power Rangers<\/i><\/b> earned $2.85 million and ranked eighth in its fourth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $80.6 million. The film has earned another $47.7 million overseas, for a global total of $128.3 million.<\/p>\n<p>And <i><b>Kong: Skull Island<\/b><\/i> earned $2.67 million and ranked tenth in its sixth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $161.2 million. The film has earned another $391.1 million overseas, for a global total of $552.3 million.<\/p>\n<p>Next week brings us <i>Born in China<\/i>, <i>Free Fire<\/i>, <i>The Promise<\/i> and <i>Unforgettable<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">1. The foreign-gross figures at Box Office Mojo are incomplete and sometimes out of date. In some cases, a movie\u2019s summary page will list no foreign grosses at all, but clicking on the \u201cforeign\u201d button will produce a list of grosses from individual countries. And sometimes, when a film <i>does<\/i> have a figure that sums up the film\u2019s foreign grosses, that figure is less up-to-date than the information for the individual countries. So, I have clicked on the \u201cforeign\u201d buttons for the top 50 \u201cfaith-based\u201d films and, when the \u201cforeign\u201d figure is older than the figures for the individual countries, I have tallied the foreign figures myself.
