It has been nearly two decades since DreamWorks released the first animated Bible movie produced by a major Hollywood studio,^1<\/sup>The Prince of Egypt<\/a><\/i>, and next month we will finally see the second such film, when Sony releases The Star<\/a><\/i>. <\/p>\n
The two films don\u2019t necessarily have a lot in common apart from the biblical angle \u2014 one is Old Testament and the other New, one was a big-budget in-house production while the other was farmed out to a cheaper Canadian firm^{2<\/sup> \u2014 but one thing the two films do<\/i> have in common is a theme song sung, in whole or in part, by Mariah Carey.<\/p>\n}
The song for the new film \u2014 named, like the film, \u2018The Star\u2019 \u2014 was released on Thursday night. There is no video for it (yet), but you can listen to it via Spotify:<\/p>\n

I\u2019m referring to feature<\/i> films, obviously. Disney, for its part, has produced a few Bible-themed short films, such as Father Noah\u2019s Ark<\/i> (1933) and The Small One<\/i> (1978). There was also a sequence based on the Noah story in the feature-length anthology Fantasia 2000<\/i> (1999).<\/span><\/p>\n2. The Prince of Egypt<\/i> had a reported budget of $60 million, which was typical for a Disney-quality film at that time (cf. 1995\u2019s Pocahontas<\/i>: $55 million; 1995\u2019s Toy Story<\/i>: $30 million; 1996\u2019s The Hunchback of Notre Dame<\/i>: $70 million; 1997\u2019s Hercules<\/i>: $85 million; 1998\u2019s Mulan<\/i>: $70 million; 1998\u2019s A Bug\u2019s Life<\/i>: $45 million; all figures are based on a quick Google search).
