{"id":581,"date":"2008-10-24T20:33:00","date_gmt":"2008-10-24T20:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2008\/10\/bolt-promo-annoys-theatre-owners\/"},"modified":"2008-10-24T20:33:00","modified_gmt":"2008-10-24T20:33:00","slug":"bolt-promo-annoys-theatre-owners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2008\/10\/bolt-promo-annoys-theatre-owners.html","title":{"rendered":"Bolt promo annoys theatre owners"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_MwnH1kpbPRM\/SQKZqNd3doI\/AAAAAAAAB9k\/pLKQ73H0WFk\/s1600-h\/bolt.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"cursor:pointer;cursor:hand;width: 400px;height: 211px\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_MwnH1kpbPRM\/SQKZqNd3doI\/AAAAAAAAB9k\/pLKQ73H0WFk\/s400\/bolt.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\"><\/a><br><span style=\"font-family: georgia\">If movie trailers can show up on DVDs, then I guess it only makes sense that DVD-ish bonus features should show up on the big screen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, I finally got around to seeing <i>Beverly Hills Chihuahua<\/i>, more out of a sense of professional obligation than anything else \u2014 and I was struck by how, before the film, there was a promo for Disney\u2019s upcoming animated film <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/10\/newsbites-comics-and-cartoons-edition_14.html#1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bolt<\/a><\/i>, in which John Travolta and Miley Cyrus spoke directly to the camera, as themselves, to introduce two entire scenes from the movie (one of which seems to come from fairly late in the story arc).<\/p>\n<p>This is the sort of promo that we see on DVDs all the time \u2014 if memory serves, Ben Stiller did a similar ad for the original <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/05\/mad-about-gascar.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Madagascar<\/a><\/i> (2005) on the DVD for <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/01\/oscar-nominations-themes-and-trends.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Shrek 2<\/a><\/i> (2004) \u2014 but I can\u2019t recall seeing anything quite like this on the big screen before.<\/p>\n<p>The nearest thing to a precedent that comes to mind is the <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/06\/wall-e-what-are-robots-meant-for.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">original teaser<\/a> for <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/07\/build-your-own-walle-out-of-paper.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">WALL\u00b7E<\/a><\/i>, which featured talking-head footage of director Andrew Stanton \u2014 but only offered the briefest of glimpses of actual footage from the actual film.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, apparently I am not the only person who finds the <i>Bolt<\/i> promo a little unusual.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/news\/movies\/la-et-bolt25-2008oct25,0,7578183.story\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">John Horn<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/the_big_picture\/2008\/10\/disney-angers-t.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Patrick Goldstein<\/a>, both writing for the <i>Los Angeles Times<\/i>, report that theatre owners are upset with Disney for running such a lengthy promo \u2014 thus eating into time that could have been available for <i>other<\/i> advertisers \u2014 and for getting the MPAA to classify the promo as a \u201cshort film\u201d, complete with PG rating, rather than as an ad.<\/p>\n<p>Disney says they won\u2019t do it again, but who knows?
