{"id":59275,"date":"2018-04-03T12:08:22","date_gmt":"2018-04-03T19:08:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/?p=59275"},"modified":"2018-04-03T12:20:00","modified_gmt":"2018-04-03T19:20:00","slug":"easter-weekend-box-office-and-ratings-superstar-hits-gods-not-dead-3-misses-i-can-only-imagine-continues-to-exceed-expectations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2018\/04\/easter-weekend-box-office-and-ratings-superstar-hits-gods-not-dead-3-misses-i-can-only-imagine-continues-to-exceed-expectations.html","title":{"rendered":"Easter weekend box office and ratings: <i>Superstar<\/i> hits, <i>God&#8217;s Not Dead 3<\/i> misses, <i>I Can Only Imagine<\/i> continues to exceed expectations"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2018\/04\/jesuschristsuperstarlive-4-a.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2018\/04\/jesuschristsuperstarlive-4-a-1024x416.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"416\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-59332\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Just a few quick notes on how religion-ish movies and TV shows did this Easter weekend.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->\u2013<\/p>\n<p>First, <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/jesus-christ-superstar-live\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert<\/a><\/i> \u2014 which I have not yet seen, though I did write about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/ct\/2018\/march-web-only\/nbc-jesus-christ-superstar-live.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Christian responses to <i>previous<\/i> versions of <i>Superstar<\/i><\/a> for <i>Christianity Today<\/i> \u2014 was the <a href=\"http:\/\/deadline.com\/2018\/04\/jesus-christ-superstar-live-in-concert-ratings-american-idol-the-passion-1202356749\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">top-rated TV show<\/a> on Sunday night, with <b>9.6 million viewers<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>That may be the biggest audience that any major-network adaptation of the Bible has had in recent years. It beats the 6.6 million viewers who watched 2016\u2019s quasi-live musical version of <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/passion-2016\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">The Passion<\/a><\/i>, it trounces the 3.3 million viewers who watched the <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2016\/03\/of-kings-and-prophets-premieres-to-low-ratings.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Of Kings and Prophets<\/a><\/i> premiere in 2016 (the show was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2016\/04\/of-kings-and-prophets-is-still-on-the-air-in-some-countries.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">cancelled<\/a> after two episodes), and it\u2019s even ahead of the 9.5 million viewers that <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2015\/06\/watch-romans-zealots-priests-and-christians-meet-for-an-epic-showdown-in-the-a-d-the-bible-continues-finale.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">A.D. The Bible Continues<\/a><\/i> had at its peak in 2015 (all but three episodes of that show landed between 3 million and 6 million viewers).<\/p>\n<p>Among recent live musicals, <i>Jesus Christ Superstar<\/i> seems to have landed somewhere in the middle \u2014 slightly ahead of <i>Hairspray<\/i> (9.1 million viewers in 2016) and <i>Peter Pan<\/i> (9.2 million viewers in 2014), well ahead of <i>A Christmas Story<\/i> (4.5 million viewers in 2017) and <i>The Passion<\/i>, and somewhere behind <i>The Wiz<\/i> (11.5 million viewers in 2015), <i>Grease<\/i> (12.2 million viewers in 2014) and <i>The Sound of Music<\/i> (18.6 million viewers in 2013).<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>Second, <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/gods-not-dead-3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">God\u2019s Not Dead: A Light in the Darkness<\/a><\/i> \u2014 the third installment in the <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/gods-not-dead\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">God\u2019s Not Dead<\/a><\/i> series \u2014 failed to crack the weekly top ten at the box office.<\/p>\n<p>The film earned only $2.7 million on 1,693 screens <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/weekend\/chart\/?view=&amp;yr=2018&amp;wknd=13&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">between Friday and Sunday<\/a>, landing it in 12th place and giving it the lowest per-screen average ($1,589) of the top twelve. It made less than half of what <i>God\u2019s Not Dead 2<\/i> opened to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2016\/04\/box-office-gods-not-dead-2-and-batman-v-superman-both-perform-below-their-not-high-to-begin-with-expectations.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">in 2016<\/a>, and less than a third of what the first film opened to when it premiered in only 780 theatres in 2014.<\/p>\n<p><i>God\u2019s Not Dead: A Light in the Darkness<\/i> also marks the fourth time in a row \u2014 following <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2018\/02\/box-office-samson-fails-crack-weekends-top-ten.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Samson<\/a><\/i> six weeks ago and <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/same-kind-of-different-as-me\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Same Kind of Different as Me<\/a><\/i> and <i>A Question of Faith<\/i> last year \u2014 that a major release from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/studio\/chart\/?yr=&amp;view=company&amp;view2=allmovies&amp;studio=pureflix.htm&amp;sort=open&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Pure Flix Studios<\/a> has failed to crack the top ten.<\/p>\n<p>Pure Flix\u2019s next release will be <i>Unbroken: Path to Redemption<\/i>, a sort of unofficial sequel to Angelina Jolie\u2019s <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/unbroken\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Unbroken<\/a><\/i> depicting the main character\u2019s conversion to Christianity \u2014 a key part of the story that many Christians and other fans of the book felt was conspicuously missing from Jolie\u2019s film adaptation. The film comes out October 5.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>Third, <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/i-can-only-imagine\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">I Can Only Imagine<\/a><\/i> and <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/paul-apostle-of-christ\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Paul, Apostle of Christ<\/a><\/i> had two of the best holds of the top ten, dropping only 23.3% and 33.2% from the previous weekend, respectively.<\/p>\n<p><i>I Can Only Imagine<\/i> grossed $10.4 million, which is easily the best that any \u201cfaith-based\u201d movie has done in its third week aside from <i>The Passion of the Christ<\/i>. And with $55.3 million in the till to date, it is already the eighth-highest-grossing \u201cfaith-based\u201d film of all time in North America. (It is also currently the eighth-biggest movie <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/yearly\/chart\/?yr=2018&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">of the year<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p><i>Paul, Apostle of Christ<\/i> grossed $3.5 million and raised its domestic total to $11.5 million. The film has earned another $667,528 overseas for a global total of $12.2 million.<\/p>\n<p>And speaking of foreign releases, <a href=\"http:\/\/deadline.com\/2018\/04\/ready-player-one-opening-black-panther-international-box-office-1202356510\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Deadline<\/a> reports that <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/mary-magdalene-2018\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Mary Magdalene<\/a><\/i> \u2014 currently playing on every continent except for Africa and Antarctica, but not in the United States or Canada \u2014 has earned only $8.3 million worldwide, as of Easter Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a far cry from the $88.6 million that director Garth Davis\u2019s previous film <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/lion-2016\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Lion<\/a><\/i> earned overseas, to say nothing of the $140.3 million it earned worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>Here are some stats re: the new \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/genres\/chart\/?id=christian.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">faith-based<\/a>\u201d films and their box-office performance:<\/p>\n<p><i>I Can Only Imagine<\/i> had the second-highest <b>third-weekend gross<\/b>:<\/p>\n<ol type=\"disc\">\n<li>2004 \u2014 <i>The Passion of the Christ<\/i> \u2014 $32.1 million \/ -39.7%\n<\/li><li><b>2018 \u2014 <i>I Can Only Imagine<\/i> \u2014 $10.4 million \/ -23.3%<\/b>\n<\/li><li>2014 \u2014 <i>Heaven Is for Real<\/i> \u2014 $8.6 million \/ -40.1%\n<\/li><li>2015 \u2014 <i>War Room<\/i> \u2014 $7.8 million \/ -18.0%\n<\/li><li>2014 \u2014 <i>God\u2019s Not Dead<\/i> \u2014 $7.8 million \/ -11.8%\n<\/li><li>2016 \u2014 <i>Miracles from Heaven<\/i> \u2014 $7.3 million
