<\/a><\/p>\nA new episode of The Chosen<\/a><\/i> is coming out in December \u2014 and it\u2019s going to play in theatres.<\/p>\n Director Dallas Jenkins made the announcement today during a livestream on the show\u2019s YouTube channel. The episode is not part of Season 2 (which was completed in July) or Season 3 (which starts shooting next year), but is a standalone episode that will be shown in theatres on December 1 & 2 as part of a special Fathom Event that will also include the show\u2019s second annual Christmas special.<\/p>\n A trailer for the episode was shown as part of the livestream, and, as befits this time of year, the episode itself \u2014 which is called \u2018The Messengers\u2019, possibly because that is what the word \u201cangels\u201d means \u2014 will apparently tell the story of the Nativity.<\/p>\n The Nativity was previously dramatized in \u2018The Shepherd<\/a>\u2019, a short film that Jenkins produced four years ago which is now sometimes described as the \u201cpilot episode\u201d for The Chosen<\/i>, and the new episode will use some of the same actors as that film \u2014 but, in its framing narrative, the new episode will also feature actors from the first two seasons of The Chosen<\/i> and introduce new characters who will play a big part in the third season.<\/p>\n Notably, the trailer shows an older Mother Mary looking for Luke so that she can tell him about the birth of Jesus. This may reflect the belief, common in some circles, that Luke\u2019s version of the Nativity tells the story from Mary\u2019s point of view (whereas Matthew\u2019s tells the story from Joseph\u2019s point of view \u2014 though he would not have heard the story from Joseph himself as it is generally assumed that Joseph was dead by the time of Jesus\u2019 ministry).<\/p>\n This will be the second time in this series that we have seen Mary talk to someone as he writes his gospel, years after the ministry of Jesus. Season 2 began with a prologue in which Mary talks to the apostle John as he starts planning his own gospel, shortly after the martyrdom of his brother James in the early A.D. 40s. But John\u2019s gospel never describes the actual Nativity itself \u2014 so maybe this new episode will explain why John left it out and Mary told her story to Luke instead?<\/p>\n In the livestream, Jenkins said the new episode\u2019s Luke scenes will take place \u201c50 years\u201d after the Nativity itself. Based on how The Chosen<\/i> calculates its dates, that would place the scenes in A.D. 46, shortly after Mary\u2019s appearance in the Season 2 prologue. Or, if \u201c50 years\u201d is just an approximate figure, the Luke scenes in the new episode could be taking place around the same time as the Season 2 prologue, between A.D. 41 and 44.<\/p>\n Either way, this does raise the question: Would Luke have been in contact with Mary or the apostles at such an early date?<\/p>\n Many people would say no. The book of Acts, which is a sequel to Luke\u2019s gospel, uses the pronoun \u201cthey\u201d to describe Paul and his traveling companions until they come to Troas in Acts 16:8, and after that it uses the pronoun \u201cwe\u201d for a while, which has led many interpreters to believe that Luke first met Paul and became a Christian at that point in Paul\u2019s journey. This would have been around A.D. 50, several years after the Season 2 prologue, and several years after the traditional date of Mary\u2019s death \u2014 and it would have taken even longer after that for Luke to connect with the church in Judea.<\/p>\n But some people would argue that Luke did<\/i> know Mary personally. Indeed, in Eastern Orthodoxy, it is traditionally believed that Luke was one of \u201cthe Seventy\u201d, a group of seventy (or seventy-two) disciples sent out by Jesus to preach and perform healings in his name, in Luke 10:1-24; and it is traditionally believed that Luke was the unnamed disciple who was walking with Cleopas when the resurrected Jesus appeared to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, in Luke 24:13-35; and it is traditionally believed that Luke painted the first icons<\/a> of Mary and Jesus during Mary\u2019s lifetime.<\/a><\/p>\n Also worth noting: The trailer shows Mary reciting part of the Magnificat, the poem that expressed Mary\u2019s joy shortly after she learned she was pregnant with the Messiah (as per Luke 1:46-55). Will this be the rare film that includes the entire<\/i> Magnificat<\/a>?<\/p>\n We will have to wait until December to find out. As noted, the episode will premiere as part of the Fathom Event in theatres on December 1 & 2, and then at some point afterwards it will be available for streaming.<\/p>\n You can watch the full livestream with the announcement and the trailer here:<\/p>\n
