That\u2019s just one of several interesting bits in this profile<\/a> of Gary Oldman, who used to be typecast as \u201cthe bad guy\u201d in films like L\u00e9on: The Professional<\/i> (1994) and Air Force One<\/i> (1997), but has lately become more of a heroic father-figure type, thanks to his supporting roles as Sirius Black in the Harry Potter<\/a><\/i> movies and as Lt. Jim Gordon in the current Batman<\/a><\/i> movies.<\/span><\/p>\n

I especially like the broader quote from which that line comes:<\/p>\n

With his second turn as Batman ally Gordon in \u201cThe Dark Knight\u201d Oldman, 50, feels as though he has finally broken ranks with the bad boys and put to rest his typecasting as a go-to guy when filmmakers needed a villain.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, I don\u2019t hear it anymore. I mean look, Rolling Stone<\/a> said, `Oldman is so skilled he makes virtue look exciting,'\u201d Oldman said in an interview with The Associated Press, quoting the magazine\u2019s review of \u201cThe Dark Knight\u201d from memory. \u201cYou know what? That\u2019s the best review I\u2019ve ever had. \u2026 I\u2019ll put that on my tombstone. `Makes virtue look exciting.\u2019 That\u2019s pretty good.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the past, I\u2019ve had my share of good reviews, but it\u2019s always the crazy, scary, weirdo guy. I don\u2019t even know how it happened. Look at me. I mean, when I\u2019m naked, I look like a bald chicken. How did I get to be a scary bad guy?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I don\u2019t know if I would call Oldman\u2019s performance in the Batman<\/i> movies \u201cexciting\u201d \u2014 it\u2019s a bit too subtle and low-key for that \u2014 but his portrayal of a man trying to be noble and virtuous in an evil and cynical world certainly resonates on a pretty deep level.<\/p>\n

And if both films have left me with a lump in my throat, it is partly due to how Oldman embodies his half of the Batman-Gordon relationship. \u201cI never thanked you.\u201d \u201cAnd you\u2019ll never have to.\u201d Gets me every time.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
